I was taken aback.Singapore? I had always dreamed of living there , and the opportunity to lead a new branch of the company was a huge honor.
"What would I need to do?" I asked, trying to keep my excitement in check.
"You would need to relocate there and oversee the setup of our new office," Ryker explained. "It's a huge opportunity, not just for the company, but for your career as well. You would be given a huge promotion and a significant salary increase."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. This was the opportunity of a lifetime, and I would be crazy to pass it up. But what about the baby? I hadn't even told Ryker about the pregnancy yet, and now he was asking me to move to Singapore.
"I don't know what to say," I said, stalling for time.
"I know it's a lot to take in," he said gently, reaching across the desk to give my hand a reassuring squeeze.
"I completely understand if you want to stay behind.
This is a huge commitment, and I don't want to force you into anything you're not ready for."
I shook my head quickly, squeezing his hand back. "No, Ryker, I want to go. This is an incredible opportunity, and I'd be honored to be a part of it. When do we leave?"
Ryker's face lit up, and he pulled me into a tight hug.
"I'm so glad to hear that, Selena. We'll be leaving in two weeks." He pulled back, cupping my face in his hands.
"This is going to be amazing, I just know it."
As I smiled back at him, trying to process all this exciting news, part of me desperately wanted to blurt out that I was pregnant. But the timing didn’t just feel right. I mean, this was a massive career move that could change the entire trajectory of my life. I didn’t want to throw a wrench in the plans by revealing I'm expecting. Not yet, at least.
As I prepared to leave the country, Kieran repeatedly tried to reach out to me, but I ignored his calls. I had no intention of returning, and I didn't want to entertain any unnecessary distractions. This was my future now, with Ryker, and I couldn't wait to see what it had in store.
The day we left, I said bye to just Macey, the only one who knew about the pregnancy. She hugged me tightly, tears in her eyes. "Are you sure about this, Selena?" she whisper in a concerned tone.
I nodded, giving her shouldersa gentle squeeze. "I'm sure, Macey. This is what I want. I am going to miss you so much."
I sold my apartment, packed up my belongings, and made all the necessary arrangements. It wasn't until I had already reached Singapore, that Kieran finally realized I was gone. I could only imagine the look of utter betrayal and fury on his face when he discovered that I had left without a word. I finally picked up his annoying call to let him know I was gone for and never coming back.
"Selena? Is that you? Where have you been? I've been trying to reach you for days! And why the hell did you sell your house?" he sounded panicked.
"Kieran, I'm not coming back," I said firmly. "I've moved on with my life, and I don't want to have anything to do with you."
"What do you mean you're not coming back? You can't just leave like this, Selena. We need to talk about this."
I sighed, rubbing my temples. Why couldn't he just leave me alone? "There's nothing to talk about. I've made my decision. I left the country and I'm not changing my mind. Please, just respect my wishes and leave me alone."
His voice rose in anger. "You're just going to go away from me like this? After everything we've been through? You're just going to abandon me?"
"bye. Have a nice life."
"Serena, wait I love you—"
I ended the call and clicked the block button.
On one fateful day, when I was finally three months pregnant, I finally found the right moment to tell Ryker about the pregnancy.
"Okay, spill it. What's going on?" He gave me a playful nudge.
I let out a nervous laugh. "Alright, alright. Come sit down, I've got something I need to tell you."
We made our way to the dining table, and I could feel my palms getting sweaty. He sat across from me, looking at me intently. I took a deep breath.
"Okay, here goes...l'm pregnant."
His eyes went wide, and for a moment, he was completely silent. I could practically see the gears turning in his head as he processed the information. I braced myself for his reaction.
Then, suddenly, the most amazing thing happened - his face just lit up with the biggest, brightest smile I'd ever seen. He jumped up from his chair and came around the table, pulling me into the tightest, most joyful hug twirling me around as if I weighed nothing.
I couldn't help but giggle at his reaction. This was not at all what I was expecting. I thought for sure he'd be freaked out, or at least a little unsure. But Kieran was just overflowing with pure, unadulterated excitement.
He set me back down and held my face in his hands, "Wow, this is...this is amazing. I can't even...I'm going to be a dad?"
I nodded, tears of joy welling up in my eyes. "Yes, Kieran. You're going to be a dad."
He let out a breathless laugh and pulled me in for another tight hug, peppering my face with little kisses.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is the best news ever!"
He reached down and gently placed his hand on my still-flat stomach. "Hello in there, little one. I'm your daddy, and I already love you so much."
I couldn't help but let out a few happy tears at his words. Seeing Ryker so excited and so in love with our unborn child already was the most beautiful thing. I knew in that moment that he was going to be the most amazing, loving, and devoted father.
What I didn’t expect was for Kieran to follow me and track me down all the way to Singapore. This man was crazy and relentless, it was so weird.
