Gregory Hill led me out of the damp, freezing shack and across the desolate yard toward another wooden cabin.
Compared to the foul-smelling hellhole they'd kept me in, this place was almost civilized—spacious, bright, and clean. A dining table stood in the center, set with water and food.
Margaret Lowell sat beside it, watching me with a smile that held nothing but cruelty. The kindness she'd faked earlier was gone.
She gestured lazily to the chair. "Sit. Eat first."
"Who the hell are you people?" My voice came out raw, furious. I had no appetite—only rage.
Instead of anger, amusement flickered in her eyes. "No need for hysterics. We brought you here for a simple job."
A job?
Kidnapping me was their idea of employment?
White-hot fury burned through me. I wanted to bolt, to run until my legs gave out.
But I'd already scoped the place on the way here.
Three armed men with AK-47s patrolled the perimeter. A dozen snarling guard dogs strained against their chains in the yard.
Even if I were Special Forces—unarmed, alone—escape would be suicide.
And I was just a college girl.
I forced myself to breathe. Losing it now wouldn't help.
"What job?" I glared at Margaret. "Who are you? Where is this?"
"Someone powerful wants to buy you."
She pulled out a tablet and tapped open a website I'd never seen. "Look. Your price on the Dark Web just hit half a million. How could I resist?"
The Dark Web.
I knew about it—the black market of the internet. Drugs, weapons, human trafficking. Even murder for hire.
But why was I listed there?
Who the hell had put me up for sale?
Margaret drummed her fingers on the table. "Now you get it. As for us? Think of us as… merchants. And this?" She smirked. "Burmese rainforest. No one's getting out."
My jaw clenched so hard it ached.
When I stayed silent, she smirked, knowing I was still scheming. Then she pointed behind me.
I turned—and froze.
In the corner lay a naked woman, bound and bleeding out in a dark pool.
Flies swarmed over her. The stench hit me like a punch.
Margaret's voice dripped with mock sympathy. "See? That's what happens when you try to run."
I didn't dare move.
"Batu," she called to the man outside. "Throw her to the dogs."
A hulking man with a scorpion tattoo stepped in, bowing. "Yes, ma'am."
He dragged the dying woman away like a sack of meat.
A wood chipper stood in the yard. Moments later, a scream tore through the air—then silence.
I flinched, trembling on the bamboo chair.
Margaret nudged the bread toward me. "Eat. Rest. Your buyer arrives at dawn." She leaned in, her breath hot on my ear. "Try to escape, and you'll end up in pieces."
