For the first time in my twenty-something years, death wasn't just some abstract concept—it was breathing down my neck, its rancid breath hot against my skin.
Food? The thought alone turned my stomach. Stranded in this godforsaken wilderness, surrounded by human traffickers who'd slit my throat without blinking, I was completely at their mercy.
No one was coming to save me.
Fear had me frozen solid. I barely even noticed when they hauled me off to some isolated cabin. Only when night fell—the guard dogs finally quiet—did my frayed nerves begin to settle.
But one question gnawed at me like a starving rat: Who the hell put a bounty on my head?
Half a million dollars. For me.
Why?
This place was a lawless hellhole crawling with warlords, cartel thugs, and organ harvesters.
Was I worth that much in parts?
Doubtful. My blood type wasn't exactly black-market gold.
So then—what? Were they planning to pump me full of drugs and turn me into a mule?
The more I spiraled, the tighter the fear coiled in my gut. Eventually, exhaustion dragged me under.
In my nightmares, I was sold to a logging camp buried deep in the rainforest.
Hundreds of men swung axes at rosewood trees day and night. And to keep them "motivated," the foreman bought women—dozens of us—as their personal entertainment.
I was one of them.
In that nightmare, there was no Ethan coming to my rescue.
So I jumped.
The moment I hit the ground, I woke up gasping, my body slick with sweat.
Then—screams.
Sophia's cabin erupted in shrieks of pain. I forced myself up, straining to see through the dark.
Sophia and the two Burmese girls were sobbing, their cries raw and broken.
Outside, the guards just laughed.
"Batu's really going at it tonight, huh?"
"These girls are getting shipped out tomorrow. Might as well have some fun while we can."
"Too bad we can't touch the main prize. Boss'd skin us alive."
My whole body went numb. I curled into a ball, shaking.
If they sold me to those loggers tomorrow, I'd fight until they put a bullet in me.
Dawn came—gray, lifeless.
Fear sat heavy in my throat. When the guards shoved bread at me, I refused. No way was I eating anything they gave me.
Hours later, engines roared outside.
Margaret barked orders, and they dragged me out—wrists tied, ankles bound. Sophia and the others followed, their faces hollow, their eyes dead.
Margaret's voice cut through the air like a blade. "Move. Your buyers are here."
A cold dread slithered down my spine. Was I really about to live that nightmare?
Beyond the yard, three SUVs idled, surrounded by eight armed men.
And then—
My breath stopped.
"Ethan?!"
Had he come to pay my ransom?
