The fabric of his pants split open on the staircase, revealing a grotesque sight that made the crowd recoil in horror.
"His legs... they're disgusting!"
"They were perfectly fine thirty seconds ago!"
"It's like his bones dissolved into jelly - there's nothing left!"
"Where's Scarlett? She swore she fixed him!"
Richard writhed on the floor, howling in pain while everyone kept their distance.
Scarlett stood rooted to the spot, her face ghostly white. Her voice shook uncontrollably.
"This... this can't be happening. He was walking just moments ago..."
Diana burst into the banquet hall, drawn by the commotion. Her eyes locked onto Richard's mutilated legs.
With a sharp crack, her palm connected with Scarlett's cheek.
"You lying little bitch! You guaranteed he'd be healed! Look at him!"
"If he loses those legs, you'll pay with more than just your medical license!"
"Guards! Take her into custody - don't let her out of your sight!"
Two hulking bodyguards seized Scarlett's arms, hauling her toward the exit as she struggled violently.
"Richard! Help me! I didn't do this!" she shrieked, voice breaking. "Tell them I'd never hurt you!"
But Richard was too consumed by agony and shame to even look at her. One guard clamped a hand over Scarlett's mouth, cutting off her pleas as they dragged her away.
Diana turned to me, her expression desperate. "Victoria... for God's sake, what do we do? Can his legs be saved?"
I exhaled slowly. "The damage is irreversible. Get him to surgery now and they might save his life - but those legs are gone."
Diana's eyes fluttered before she collapsed in a dead faint.
Richard lifted his sweat-drenched face, teeth gritted. "Like hell I'm letting them cut me! This is your revenge, Victoria!"
"I'd rather die than let you win! Touch me and I'll sue this entire hospital!"
A humorless laugh escaped me. "Revenge? Don't flatter yourself. You know exactly what poison Scarlett pumped into you."
"Live or die - makes no difference to me."
I turned on my heel without another word. Max fell into step beside me after a moment's hesitation.
"Victoria..." he began cautiously, "...did you anticipate this outcome?"
I stopped dead, fixing him with an icy stare. "Are you suggesting this is my fault?"
He backpedaled instantly. "No! God no - the bastard had this coming. Frankly, I'm enjoying the show."
"I just... how did you know it would go south? Not that you owed him any warning," he added quickly, rubbing his neck. "Shit, that came out wrong..."
I rolled my eyes at his fumbling apology and kept walking.
