I took a deep breath before continuing. "Diana showed me footage of Scarlett preparing the medicine. One of the unlabeled liquids caught my eye—I had my suspicions..."
"When Richard suddenly stood up, it clicked—Eroded Butterfly Water."
"It gives paralyzed limbs temporary mobility by supercharging cell activity... but within minutes, it starts eating the body from the inside out."
Max's eyebrows knitted together. "So Scarlett intentionally poisoned him?"
I shook my head slowly. "Hard to say if she's dangerously incompetent or just someone's pawn."
He didn't press further, silently offering me a ride home.
As my foot hit the pavement, my phone buzzed—Diana again. "Miss Baldridge, please come to the hospital! I don't know who else to—" Richard's roar cut through the call. "I'm not losing my legs! Stop taking medical advice from that quack Victoria! Scarlett said this is just part of the healing process—my bones are remodeling!"
In the background, Diana's voice cracked with desperation. "Richard, even the specialists say it's life-threatening! Please, listen to your mother!" The sound of shattering glass punctuated her plea before she returned to me, voice trembling. "The surgeons aren't confident. Please—just come assess him yourself."
Max, who'd lingered, fell into step beside me as I turned back toward his car.
Halfway to the hospital, he finally broke the silence. "You planning to save him?"
I rolled down the window, letting the icy air slap my face. "No."
"I just want front-row seats to watch him suffer something worse than death."
Max's grip tightened on the wheel. "That's... intense. Didn't realize you two had history."
A frosty smile played on my lips. "He owes me a life."
I closed my eyes, effectively ending the conversation. Max took the hint.
At the hospital, we found Diana outside Richard's barricaded room, her face puffy from crying. "Miss Baldridge, can you reason with him?"
"I'm the last person he'll listen to. Anything I say will sound like sabotage." I crossed my arms. "Why not ask his beloved Scarlett?"
Diana's jaw clenched at the name, but desperation won out. She summoned a guard to fetch Scarlett.
Minutes later, Scarlett was sobbing at Richard's bedside. "Does it hurt terribly? The formula should've—I don't understand—"
Richard tried to comfort her, but the movement sent white-hot pain through his lower body. When he could speak again, his voice was thin with fear: "You promised no amputation, Scarlett. This is just... restructuring, right?"
Scarlett's gaze dropped to his ruined legs, the sheets dark with blood. Diana's warnings and the doctors' prognosis echoed in her mind.
Her voice wavered. "Richard... maybe the surgeons are right this time..."
Richard's unblinking stare locked onto hers, searching for betrayal.
