Scarlett went rigid. Her pupils shrank to pinpricks as she whispered in disbelief,
"How could the Butterfly Etching Water be poison? He swore it would heal your leg... How could he lie to me?"
Her voice cracked. "This has to be a mistake! I didn't do this—it wasn't me!"
Richard's last shred of denial shattered.
"So... it really was you." His voice turned hollow. "Scarlett, you did this to me."
With the truth laid bare, Richard became a broken man in every sense.
Max and I excused ourselves, leaving the Thaddeus family to their unraveling.
Over the next two months, Max found every excuse to see me.
Then, one day, he brought fresh gossip about Richard.
Turns out, Scarlett had never braved the snowy mountains for a Snow Lotus. Instead, she'd spent a month cozying up to a con artist, desperate for a miracle cure.
And that con artist? Someone Richard had crossed. He'd used Scarlett as his revenge.
When Richard found out, their fight turned vicious.
"You're a cripple now—who else would even want you?" Scarlett had shrieked. "If I'd known I couldn't fix you, I'd have moved on ages ago! And you dare lecture me?"
"Face it—everyone calls you 'Disabled Thaddeus' behind your back!"
Richard snapped. He struck her. Scarlett fled—only to crawl back later, battered and dumped by her new "protector."
This time, Richard lost all restraint. He locked her away, tormenting her until she shattered.
In the end, Scarlett lunged at him in a frenzy, landing them both in the hospital. Diana had her committed.
Hearing it all left me unsettled.
Was this the ending Richard had wanted in his past life?
Meanwhile, Max and I grew closer, our shared history weaving us together.
Three months later, he knelt with roses in hand.
"Victoria, I saved you as a child. Now you've saved me. It's fate. Marry me?"
Tears welled as I opened my mouth to answer—
"She won't!"
Richard's wheelchair screeched to a halt beside us, his eyes wild.
"Victoria, don't. I remember everything now. I was wrong—so wrong—in our past life. Please... give me another chance."
My breath caught.
He'd been reborn too.
Max stepped between us, his voice a blade.
"Richard, what delusion are you spouting? After what you did, you dare show your face?"
But Richard stared straight at me, raw and pleading.
"I know you remember. Otherwise, you wouldn't have let me die this time."
"I know you hate me. You have every right. But I regret all of it—not cherishing you, hurting you... I've loved you all along. I was just too blind to see it."
"Please... one more chance."
I met his gaze, ice in my veins.
"Regret what, Richard? Isn't this exactly the ending you chose last time?"
