After turning himself in, Spencer stayed eerily calm, his face an unreadable mask.
He never once looked at Gloria's body on the ground—not even a glance.
The police showed up minutes later.
The moment they arrived, they slapped cuffs on Spencer and prepared to haul him away.
Before they could, he turned to me, his voice thick with emotion. "Linsey… this might be the last time we see each other. I know I've hurt you and Dora beyond repair, but… please. Can you ever forgive me?"
His eyes were pools of regret, desperate for absolution.
But I didn't hesitate. "No."
The light in his eyes died right then. He just nodded, resigned, as the officers led him off.
Whatever happened to Spencer now didn't matter. Nothing would bring Dora back.
Forgiveness wasn't in the cards.
With Spencer and Gloria's stories over, life settled into an uneasy quiet.
No more disturbances. No one left to care.
But the silence was deafening. I was alone, drowning in the emptiness Dora had left behind.
During the day, I'd wander to the place where she'd been taken from me.
Gloria's death lifted some of the weight—but not enough.
If only Dora could see her killer pay for what he did. Maybe then she'd rest easy.
One afternoon, as I walked along the familiar stretch of road, something made me freeze.
A little girl in a pink dress, long braids swaying, a Disney princess backpack bouncing with each step.
She looked just like Dora.
Our eyes met—and she smiled at me.
My breath caught.
Was it… her?
But before hope could take root, a truck barreled around the corner, speeding straight for her.
"LOOK OUT!"
I didn't think. I just moved.
I lunged, shoving her out of the way with every ounce of strength I had.
The impact was deafening.
My body flew. Blood filled my mouth.
But in that split second—amid the screeching metal and blinding pain—I saw her.
Dora. Smiling.
And I smiled back.
"This time, baby… Mom saved you."
