Gloria stepped closer, her voice dripping with faux sympathy. "Linsey, my sweet Danny passed away so suddenly. I was devastated—that's why I asked Spencer to stay with me. Don't be upset, okay?"
Her tone was honeyed, but her eyes gleamed with smug superiority, like she was silently taunting, He'll always choose me over you.
I kept my face blank. "Wow, how lucky you are to have such a devoted man."
Spencer's brows furrowed. "Linsey, can you not? Gloria's grieving, and you're making snide remarks?"
I shot him a look. Without a word, I shoved past him, my shoulder knocking into his as I walked away.
For once, I didn't scream. Didn't cry. Just left.
Spencer actually seemed stunned.
Two seconds later, he caught up, his voice low and wheedling. "Is this really about Dora? You're still mad I didn't pick her up? Come on, how long are you gonna punish me for one mistake?"
Classic. He messes up, but I'm the unreasonable one.
"Yeah, sure. Everything's my fault," I said flatly, not even glancing at him.
My icy tone threw him off. His voice softened, almost pleading. "Look, Gloria was in a bad place. I couldn't just leave her alone—what if something happened? Tell Dora I'll make it up to her. She's a good kid; she'll understand, right?"
If he'd bothered to check in with his own family, he'd know. But no—Gloria had his full attention.
"Too late for that," I said, walking off again.
He grabbed my arm. "What do you mean, 'too late'? Fine, I'll pick Dora up from school every day. Happy now?"
For the first time ever, he was actually trying to compromise.
If Dora were still here… maybe I'd have caved.
But not now.
"Let's just get the divorce finalized," I said, wrenching my arm free and walking away without a backward glance.
Spencer stared after me, a strange unease settling in his chest. He pulled out his phone and dialed his secretary.
"Jenna, get the most expensive doll you can find. Send it to my daughter. Tell her to put in a good word for me with her mom."
