I hadn't even made it to the cemetery gates when my phone rang. It was the manager, his voice urgent.
"Ms. Wood—someone's digging up your daughter's grave!"
The words struck me like a thunderbolt, shattering my chest. Without thinking, I spun around and sprinted toward Dora's plot, my pulse roaring in my ears.
Dora had been sunshine incarnate—bright, warm, full of life. She adored daisies, those little sun-chasers, and dreamed of filling our backyard with them. She never got the chance, so after she was gone, I blanketed her grave with them instead. No headstone—just an ocean of white petals, each one whispering my love for her.
"Spencer, look at all these daisies! Danny would've loved it here."
Gloria's sickly sweet voice hit me before I even reached the scene. There she was, delicately placing her son's urn into the freshly dug pit while two hulking bodyguards shoveled dirt over it. My daisies—torn up, trampled, discarded like trash. And Dora's urn? Tossed aside like garbage, half-buried in filth.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!"
I lunged forward, shoving past the bodyguards, my voice raw with fury. "Who gave you the right to touch this grave?!"
Gloria flinched, pressing herself against Spencer like some fragile damsel. "I—I thought it was abandoned! No marker, just flowers... Danny deserved somewhere peaceful. I even told the manager to compensate the family. Money fixes everything, right? The dead don't care." She clutched Spencer's arm, wide-eyed. "But you're screaming at me like some madwoman—you're terrifying!"
Every word out of her mouth made my skin crawl. I didn't bother arguing. Instead, I grabbed a shovel and started digging like a woman possessed, throwing dirt aside in frantic handfuls.
This was Dora's place. Mine. And I'd be damned if I let them take it from her.
"Linsey, STOP!" Spencer roared, wrenching the shovel from my grip.
"You're a MONSTER!" I screamed back, dropping to my knees, clawing at the earth with bare hands.
Gloria shrieked. "Don't just stand there—GRAB HER! She can't touch Danny's urn!"
The bodyguards seized me, their grip iron-tight as I thrashed.
"LET ME GO!"
Spencer loomed over me, his expression ice. "Gloria's grieving, and you're making it worse. Apologize. NOW."
