After that day, I moved out of the house Grayson and I had bought together.
For the next month, except for discussing divorce details, I didn't respond to any of Grayson's messages.
After work that day, I was planning to grab dinner with coworkers when I saw Grayson waiting for me downstairs.
"Hey, isn't that your husband?" one of my colleagues spotted him first.
After seven years of marriage, Grayson had often picked me up from work, so my coworkers knew him well.
"Yeah, I'm gonna skip dinner tonight."
I didn't explain further, just walked over to Grayson in front of everyone.
Seeing me approach, he immediately stubbed out his cigarette.
"I only had one."
My expression stayed blank. "You don't need to explain anything to me."
He opened his mouth but ultimately said nothing.
It was dinner time, so we found a restaurant without a wait.
When it came time to pay, I instinctively told the server:
"Hi, we'd like to pay separately."
The server looked confused and glanced back and forth between us several times.
Grayson's face darkened as he stepped in front of me. "Ring it all together. I'll get this."
I glanced at the bill and transferred my share via Venmo while he was paying.
Ding—his phone received a payment notification.
"Didn't you say you were paying?" He frowned, looking somewhat displeased.
I suddenly found it almost funny.
Before, he'd get upset if I didn't split costs immediately. Now I was splitting costs promptly and he was still upset.
After we sat down, Grayson started monologuing.
Basically, during the time I'd been away from home, he'd thought long and hard and realized he'd done a lot of inappropriate things.
But I remained completely unmoved throughout.
Maybe he realized that such casual apologies weren't enough to calm my anger.
So he finally got to the real purpose of this meeting.
"I had a complete heart-to-heart with Raven and got back all the money I'd lent her over the years—about 1.4 million total."
He looked at me seriously, expecting positive acknowledgment.
In his logic, he'd already made a huge concession.
After all, compared to his past behavior, this was definitely a major change.
I looked at him quietly, then suddenly smiled.
He shifted uncomfortably. "What are you smiling about?"
"Grayson, do you remember two years ago when I asked to borrow money from you so my parents could buy an apartment with an elevator?"
Grayson's face changed dramatically, even showing a hint of panic.
He opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but no words came out.
I knew he remembered.
Two years ago, my father had fallen down the stairs and spent over six months bedridden in the hospital before recovering.
Afterward, I wanted to get them an apartment with an elevator.
We were just ten thousand short for the down payment, so I swallowed my pride and asked Grayson for a loan.
But he'd said: "Tessa, we agreed before marriage that we'd each take care of our own parents. Plus we split everything fifty-fifty, so I can't contribute to this expense."
I'd patiently explained: "I'm just borrowing it, not asking you to split it. You wouldn't pay a cent. I'll pay you back with my year-end bonus."
But Grayson insisted he didn't have that much money available.
I thought maybe he really didn't have the cash.
So I ended up renting my parents a small apartment temporarily.
But now Grayson was personally telling me he'd lent Raven over 1.4 million dollars interest-free over the years.
1.4 million.
How fucking ridiculous.
When his father-in-law fell and was hospitalized, he didn't care.
When his wife had appendicitis and was hospitalized, he wanted to split the bill.
But for Raven, he could give everything he had without hesitation—Time and time again!
Apparently, whether it was his wife or his father-in-law, neither of us mattered as much as his precious childhood sweetheart in Grayson's eyes.
