Text barely sent when I heard them laughing upstairs.
Rain hitting the windows sounded like tiny needles stabbing my heart.
3 AM and I dragged my ass to the kitchen for water.
Out of nowhere, Sophia appeared in the dark.
"Can't sleep, Evelyn? Duh—dead mom, dead baby, and Blake grinding whatever dignity you had left into the dirt. No wonder you're up."
I slammed my glass down hard.
"Sophia, Blake has his pick of women. Why the fuck are you so set on making my life hell?"
She jabbed her finger into my shoulder. "Those other bitches don't hold a candle to you, do they? Pissed off? Let's play a game..."
Next thing I knew, she headed for the balcony.
"Wonder what would happen if I jumped from here, Evelyn?"
Before I could even blink, she'd climbed onto the railing.
"HELP! SHE'S PUSHING ME!" she shouted.
I lunged forward and grabbed her arm.
That's when I heard Blake roar behind me.
Sophia tipped backward, her scared eyes locked on my outstretched hand.
Just like that night years ago.
Blake froze.
Everything came rushing back to him.
Ten years ago, standing in the rain, watching his mom fall from that window.
And there in the window—my dad's shadow, gone in a flash.
Now I stood in the exact same spot, my fingers inches from Sophia's shoulders.
"NO!"
His rage exploded like a bomb.
How fucking dare I?
How dare I try to kill someone he cared about—the same damn way?
In his eyes, my face morphed into my dad's cold one.
Same poisonous blood.
Next second, he slammed me to the ground. Pain exploded in my shoulder.
Blake pinned me against the wall, choking me.
"You're a killer just like your dad!"
"No—she—did this—herself," I gasped and barely managed to get out a few words.
Sophia threw herself at his legs, crying her eyes out.
"Blake! I'm so scared! She said she'd make me pay—said she was gonna push me!"
The housekeeper rushed in, pulling at Blake's arm.
"Sir! Please stop! Miss Sophia is fine!"
I clutched my throat, barely able to talk.
"Cameras. Check the damn cameras."
"Shut up! I SAW you behind her! My mom died the same way because of your piece-of-shit father."
He wouldn't even listen.
Same old story.
Three years ago, and now today.
He only ever believed what he wanted to believe, never giving me a chance to speak.
The kicker?
If he hated me so much, why keep me around?
Mom was dead. I'd been his punching bag for three years. I even lost our baby.
Wasn't that enough pain?
Did I need to die to pay for his mom's life?
Blake finally backed off when the housekeeper broke through to him.
He left with a "watch yourself" before carrying Sophia away like a princess.
Once his footsteps faded, the old housekeeper helped me off the floor.
"Mrs. Harrison, don't blame him. He doesn't know his own heart!"
"Everyone at the house sees it. He keeps all your gifts in his desk drawer. Gets your favorite osmanthus scent every month. And those snacks you love—"
Doesn't know his own heart? Yeah, right.
I remembered Blake's eyes as he choked me.
I remembered Sophia's smug smile wearing Mom's pendant.
I remembered the moans from his phone while I miscarried my baby.
Enough. Three years of taking his shit, backing down, suffering—all of it was enough.
I pulled away and headed to my bedroom.
Next morning, I checked my phone.
Mr. Lewis had texted back.
I stared at it for three seconds, then laughed as I pulled up Blake's contact.
"Blake, we need to talk."
This time, no more Miss Nice Girl. No more weakness.
Either we'd both burn together.
Or I'd rip his lies apart with my bare hands.
My phone lit up with his name.
"3 PM, North District Studio 7. Get on your knees and beg Sophia's forgiveness, or forget ever seeing your mom's ashes again."
