"Dad?"
Liam's tiny voice trembled.
I stood up and scooped him into my arms, his bare feet swinging.
"Go to sleep, sweetheart."
He clutched my hand and didn't ask questions.
Just whispered "okay" and shut his eyes.
Daniel walked in, looking uneasy.
"I didn't mean to hurt you just now…"
I smoothed the blanket over Liam's chest, my voice low.
"Mm-hmm."
Daniel paused, then sat down beside me.
His stern expression started to soften.
"I'm not saying Liam shouldn't have nice clothes.
I just meant… he's growing fast.
It's a waste to splurge on something he'll outgrow in a few months."
I stopped patting the blanket.
I couldn't hold my tongue.
"But buying Bella premium night cream isn't a waste?"
Daniel jerked to his feet like I'd slapped him.
"You were spying on me!"
"So that's what this whole mood's about—a damn jar of premium night cream?"
"Typical farm girl—always nitpicking."
I turned away, about to snap back.
But out of the corner of my eye, I caught a flutter of Liam's lashes.
He was pretending to sleep.
In an instant, all my anger drained out of me like air from a balloon.
"Get out. I don't want to argue."
Daniel huffed but swallowed whatever he was going to say.
Then turned and left.
I leaned back against the headboard, holding in my sobs.
Hummed a lullaby through the tightness in my throat.
Just six more days.
Six more days, and Mama's taking Liam home.
The next few days, Daniel didn't come home.
Honestly, I didn't mind the peace.
I spent my time buying supplies and finishing Liam's clothes.
With just three days to go, I finally finished them.
Liam lay across my lap, eyes bright.
"Mom, this is so cool!"
I smiled and helped him sit up.
"If you like it, then it's perfect.
My Liam finally has his own brand-new clothes."
I held them up and slipped the sleeves over his little arms.
Liam ran his fingers along the fabric, beaming with a toothy grin.
"You're the best, Mom. I'm gonna take really good care of these."
We were still laughing when the front door opened.
Daniel walked in—
With Bella right behind him.
She paused when she saw us.
Something about her expression twisted.
Then she slid up beside Daniel and grabbed his arm.
"Daniel, who are they?"
Liam clutched the leg of my jeans, eyes full of hope as he looked at Daniel.
But Daniel didn't answer right away.
There was hesitation in his voice.
"Relatives from out of town."
Four little words.
And just like that, all the light went out of Liam's eyes.
I looked at his face and felt my heart break.
I opened my mouth—
But Liam spoke first.
" Hi, Colonel. "
He forced a smile, but his eyes were bright red.
So small.
And already too good at swallowing pain.
"Mom, let's go. We don't wanna bother the mister anymore."
My throat closed up, a lump rising so high I couldn't breathe.
I managed a single word.
"Okay."
I took his hand.
We turned to leave.
As we brushed past, Daniel grabbed my arm.
"Wait."
