Apparently, Daniel wasn't impressed by how well Liam and I took the hint.
He stared at me, totally thrown off.
"What did Liam just call me?"
I gave him a polite little smile.
"Uncle. We country folks don't dare act too familiar with Colonel Foster."
Daniel looked at me, his expression flickering, and finally landing on a flicker of guilt.
"I've got some friends coming over for dinner tonight. Make a few extra dishes."
His casual tone made Bella's smile freeze for a second.
I was about to refuse when Daniel added,
"Thanks for the help. I'll pay you for the trouble tonight."
The words caught me off guard. I closed my mouth and nodded.
I'd be leaving soon anyway. No harm in making a little extra cash.
I settled Liam down, then headed out to pick up groceries.
But when I got back, I heard my son crying from the yard.
"Mom!"
Every nerve in my body snapped.
I kicked open the front door and ran inside.
"Liam! Where are you?"
He was on the ground, his brand-new clothes now smudged with dirt.
Daniel was just bending down to pick him up.
"Mom…"
When Liam saw me, he turned his head with difficulty, eyes red and watery.
My heart clenched like it was being wrung out.
I dropped the groceries and shoved Daniel aside, falling to my knees to cradle Liam.
"Liam, baby, what happened?"
"Don't scare Mommy like that."
He raised his head, and a slow trickle of blood ran from his nose.
"It hurts…"
Daniel frowned hard, clearly worried, but he tried to stay calm.
"Charlotte, don't panic."
"The steps aren't that high—he's gonna be okay."
I shot him a look like knives.
"What the hell happened? How did Liam fall?"
Daniel's lashes twitched. His breathing grew heavier.
"It was…"
"I accidentally bumped into him."
Bella stood at the top of the porch, looking down at us, her voice full of fake guilt.
"Emily, I'm so sorry. I didn't even see him standing behind me."
"I just turned around and—he fell."
She turned to Daniel and reached for his hand.
"Daniel, you believe me, don't you?"
I looked at Daniel like I could drill a hole through him with my stare.
He flinched, visibly uncomfortable.
"Bella didn't mean—"
Bella clung to his side.
"You believe me, right?"
For once, Daniel didn't answer.
A heavy silence fell over the yard.
"Mom, it hurts…"
Liam's voice snapped me back to reality.
I scooped him up carefully and rushed for the door.
"Charlotte, wait—I'll drive—"
"Daniel!"
Bella's voice rose sharply, stopping him in his tracks.
And just like that, I didn't even look back.
Only three days left.
And I couldn't wait any longer.
