After the doctor finished checking him out, I felt like I'd collapsed inside.
Liam's eyes were red, but the first thing he did was apologize.
"Sorry, Mom. I got my new clothes dirty…"
The pain hit so hard it turned into tears.
"I'm the one who's sorry, Liam. I'm so sorry."
"I never should've left. I should've stayed with you. This was my fault."
He winced through the pain but gave me a little smile.
"Mom… I wanna go home."
I nodded.
"Okay, baby. Let's go home."
That night, the house was empty.
I asked the doctor a few final questions, then went home to pack our bags.
By sunrise, I had Liam with me at the train station.
We passed the hospital on the way, and I caught sight of Daniel.
He was rushing toward the front entrance with a bag of fruit in hand, looking desperate.
My chest ached, but I held Liam closer.
From now on, he and I were on our own.
No more ties. No more waiting.
On the other side of town, Daniel dragged a reluctant Bella to the nurse's station.
"Hi, I'm looking for a little boy—his name is Liam Foster."
The nurse looked confused.
"Liam Foster? He checked out last night."
"His mom said they had to catch a train home this morning."
Thud.
The fruit bag hit the floor.
Daniel's eyes narrowed, and he turned and bolted out the door.
