Daniel sat up and rubbed his temples.
He'd napped the whole afternoon and still felt drained.
"Colonel Foster, you in there?"
"The entertainment show's about to start!"
The show. Right.
Tonight was Bella's performance.
He never missed her shows unless he was on assignment.
And yet, he'd forgotten.
He splashed some cold water on his face and headed toward the auditorium.
By the time he found a seat, the show was already underway.
Sergeant Major Declan Murphy spotted him and raised a brow.
"Well, look who finally decided to show up," Declan joked.
"Thought you'd be here an hour ago, front row and everything."
"Don't tell me you were gonna miss Bella's number?"
Declan had served with Daniel for years—they'd been through hell together.
He also knew all about Daniel's not-so-subtle crush on Bella.
Daniel paused, then gave a half-hearted smile.
Didn't bother explaining.
Declan studied him.
Usually, whenever Bella's name came up, Daniel would smirk like a schoolboy with a crush.
Not tonight.
Instead, there were shadows under his eyes and a tension he couldn't hide.
"Hey man, what's going on?" Declan asked, concerned now.
"Don't tell me it's those country relatives again?"
He frowned, voice dropping:
"I mean seriously, why are you even letting them stay in the military family housing?"
"They're not even close relatives."
"You need to cut them loose, man."
"They're just getting in the way of you and Bella."
"If you're too nice to do it, let me handle it for you."
Declan sounded ready to go to war over it.
Daniel, though, flinched.
See, I wasn't just some cousin.
Daniel and I were teenage sweethearts.
He was eighteen.
I was seventeen.
We only met once before our families arranged everything.
Two weeks after the wedding, he enlisted.
At first, he'd lie awake some nights thinking about home.
Thinking about his brand-new wife.
But then he started winning medals.
Getting promoted.
Meeting people from all walks of life.
Eventually, he began to wonder if I was ever really the "right" choice.
He saw all these confident women around the base—strong, independent, accomplished.
Women with ambition.
Goals.
Attitude.
And then there was me.
Some girl from a tiny town who could cook and clean and not much else.
The higher he climbed, the louder that voice in his head got.
The one that said marrying me had been a mistake.
That I'd taken advantage of his youth and his soft heart.
Bella was different.
She was the star of the entertainment troupe.
Charming, poised, everyone loved her.
That was the kind of woman who deserved to stand beside him.
And with that thought in mind, he buried our marriage.
Pretended it never existed.
Played the part of a single man.
Chased Bella like he owed her the world.
He figured—no license, no marriage.
And the one who isn't loved?
She's the side piece. Not Bella.
