I was married to the CEO for six years—
Secretly.
And for all six of those years, he refused to let our son call him "Dad."
After he missed our son's birthday again—because of his assistant—I finally had enough.
I handed him the divorce papers and walked away with our child for good.
The man who always kept his cool completely lost it.
He barged into the office like a madman, demanding to know where I'd gone.
But this time, my son and I aren't looking back.
"Olivia, I'm heading overseas for grad school next month."
"Here's my resignation letter."
Olivia looked at me, stunned.
"That's... really sudden."
I gave her the explanation I'd prepared weeks ago.
"Leo's father is in Australia."
"I'm taking my son over so we can be a family again."
Olivia nodded slowly.
"Well, I get it."
"You've been raising him on your own this whole time—must've been exhausting."
"We all thought you were a single mom."
I gave a small smile.
I wasn't before, but I will be soon.
Just as I walked out of the office, I ran right into Nate and Zoe.
Nate—my boss.
And the father of my child.
Seven years ago, I was his personal assistant.
One drunken night, and we ended up with a son.
This year marks our sixth year of being secretly married.
And the sixth year he's refused to let our son call him "Dad."
Nate walked slowly, deliberately, as if matching Zoe's pace.
Zoe had one hand on a stack of reports and the other clutching the hem of Nate's suit jacket, like they were some sweet office couple.
Honestly, the sight made my stomach turn.
As we passed each other, my heart skipped a beat.
I couldn't help it—I called out.
"Darling…"
Nate stopped in his tracks, his voice cold.
"Sophia Hart."
That distant, formal tone carried a warning.
A reminder:
This is the office.
We're nothing more than boss and employee here.
I got the message loud and clear.
I swallowed everything I'd wanted to say.
"Nate."
He gave a noncommittal grunt and kept walking.
Like I was just another stranger.
I let out a bitter laugh.
Didn't even bother telling him I was quitting.
Why would he care anyway?
My phone lit up with a message from my son, sent from his smartwatch.
Mom, is Dad coming to my birthday tonight?
I froze for a second and instinctively turned around.
Nate was leaning down, talking softly to Zoe.
Someone walked by and he instinctively pulled Zoe into his arms, protective and affectionate.
The warmth in his eyes stabbed me like a knife.
Swallowing down the ache in my chest, I still texted him.
It's your son's birthday today.
Are you free tonight?
Across the hallway, I saw Nate glance at his phone.
Three seconds later, he put it down like nothing happened.
No reaction.
No reply.
I stared at the blank chat screen and gave a dry little laugh.
Come on, Sophia.
When are you gonna wake up?
You've known all along he doesn't care.
What were you hoping for?
I slid my phone back into my pocket and took a deep breath.
Nate, you'll be free real soon.
