“Thirty-eight million?!”
Miles’s relatives erupted in disbelief, shouting over one another.
Some even started crying.
“We wouldn’t earn that much in ten lifetimes! It’s all their fault!” one of them said, pointing at Miles’s parents.
“They told us to smash everything! They should pay!”
“Exactly! They kept saying their son was loaded, that money wasn’t an issue. Let them deal with it!”
A particularly aggressive cousin stomped over to Miles’s dad.
“We were played, and now we’re stuck with this mess."
"If you don’t pay up, don’t bother showing your face back in the village. You’ll regret it.”
Miles’s dad went pale, trembling under the threat.
The officer raised an eyebrow.
“Threatening someone? In a police station? Bold choice.”
That was the moment Miles’s parents realized just how deep they were in.
They turned to me, their voices dripping with fake sweetness.
“Lila, we may have gotten carried away."
"Let’s just wait for Miles to come home, and we can figure this out together, okay?”
I didn’t budge.
“You’ve spent years assuming everything I have belongs to Miles."
"But he built his success on my family’s money. And Miles isn’t coming back.”
They looked like they were about to collapse.
Miles’s mom dropped to her knees, clasping her hands together.
“Lila, please… just this once. Forgive us. We can’t pay that kind of money.”
I pulled a pen and paper from my bag and placed them in front of her.
“Then write me an IOU.”
“What?”
She hesitated, but the relatives behind her glared daggers.
“Sign it already!” someone snapped.
With shaking hands, Miles’s dad finally scribbled his name on the $38 million IOU.
As they handed it over, Miles’s mom leaned in and whispered to him, “Don’t worry. Once Lila calms down, Miles will step in and fix this.”
Hearing that, Miles’s dad straightened up, trying to regain some dignity.
I handed more documents to the officer.
“Officer, I’d also like to file charges for unlawful entry.”
The room fell silent as everyone exchanged uneasy glances.
I pulled out my phone and played the security footage.
“Officer, here’s the proof. They broke into my house without permission, destroyed my expensive plants and goldfish, and ruined my carpets and furniture.'
"Since they can’t afford to pay, maybe some time behind bars will make up for it.”
Within minutes, every single one of Miles’s relatives was in handcuffs, their New Year’s celebration officially moved to jail.
Only the underage kids were spared, left clinging to Miles’s parents for comfort.
Miles’s mom shot me a furious glare.
“Lila, don’t take this too far!”
Take it too far?
If they only knew the role they played in my parents’ deaths, they’d be grateful I let them live.
I was still stewing when the door to a side room creaked open, and out walked Serena Blake, her eyes puffy and red from crying.
Miles’s parents froze at the sight of her.
“Serena? What are you doing here? Where’s Miles?”
So, everyone knew about Miles’s affair with Serena.
Not that I was surprised—I had helped orchestrate it, after all.
Serena looked just as startled to see them.
“Mr. and Mrs. Rivers… what are you doing here?”
Miles’s dad ignored her question, peering over her shoulder like he expected Miles to walk out any second.
“Where’s Miles? Isn’t he with you? We’ve been trying to call him all day, but his phone’s off."
"Can you reach him?”
Serena’s lip trembled, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“Mr. and Mrs. Rivers… Miles… he’s… he’s…”
“What?” Miles’s mom demanded.
“What happened to him? Spit it out!”
“He’s dead.”
I finally chimed in, unable to resist.
“Guess the lovebirds weren’t as invincible as they thought.”
Miles’s mom whipped around to glare at me.
“Shut your mouth!” she snapped.
Just then, the officer stepped in.
“Are you Miles Rivers’s parents?”
“Yes, we are,” Miles’s dad said, his voice tense.
“Is he in trouble?”
“Not exactly,” the officer replied, looking them over carefully.
“But I should let you know… he passed away about five hours ago.”
“What?!”
Miles’s mom’s eyes rolled back, and she fainted on the spot.
Miles’s dad staggered and collapsed into a chair.
Serena rushed to help them, tears streaming down her face.
“Please, Mr. and Mrs. Rivers, stay strong,” she pleaded.
Miles’s dad grabbed her hand in a death grip.
“Serena, tell me—what happened to him? How could he just… die?"
"We talked to him earlier today! He was with you—what did you do to him?”
“I… I didn’t…” Serena stammered, her face turning crimson.
She stared at the floor, too ashamed to admit the truth.
The officer turned to me.
“Mrs. Rivers, we’ve completed our investigation."
"There’s no evidence of foul play, so Ms. Blake is free to go.”
I stood and smiled.
“Thank you, Officer. That’s all I needed to hear.”
Of course, I didn’t want Serena in jail.
Not yet.
Miles’s dad narrowed his eyes at her, suspicion brewing.
“Miles died while he was with you, didn’t he? What the hell did you do to him?”
He lunged forward, hands outstretched, ready to strangle her.
I stepped between them and pulled Serena behind me.
Miles’s dad stumbled, his hands closing on empty air.
Serena collapsed against me, sobbing.
“Lila, I don’t know how this happened! Miles was so good to me…”
She trailed off, realizing what she’d just said.
Quickly, she pulled away, standing a few feet back.
“I’m sorry, Lila. I made a mistake. I was weak. Please… can you forgive me?”
I laughed coldly.
“You slept with my husband. He died on top of you, leaving me a widow."
"And now you want me to forgive you?”
Miles’s mom groaned as she came to, catching the tail end of my words.
Her eyes snapped open, and she shot up like a rocket.
“It’s you! You killed my son! I’ll make you pay for this!”
She lunged at Serena, grabbing fistfuls of her hair.
Within seconds, Serena’s face was covered in bloody scratches.
Fighting inside a police station was never going to end well.
The officers quickly stepped in to separate them.
I didn’t stick around to watch the fallout.
I turned and walked out, leaving the chaos behind me.
