“We can’t trust Lila to handle the money,” Miles’s mom declared, hands on her hips, her voice full of self-righteous indignation.
“We’re settling this today. My son was the CEO of a major company—he made more money than most people could dream of."
'If we leave it in the hands of this careless woman, it’ll be gone before the week is out.”
Miles had never told his parents the truth about our financial situation.
He let them believe the company he ran was his, not my family’s.
He said it was to make them proud, to show them he’d made something of himself.
Back when I loved him, I believed everything he said.
But the truth was, the money they were so eager to claim?
It was all mine.
I calmly handed the lawyer a detailed report of Miles’s assets.
When Miles’s parents and Serena saw the endless line of zeroes, their jaws practically hit the floor.
Miles’s mom looked like she might drop to her knees from sheer excitement.
They’d forgotten one minor detail: their son had only been dead for a few hours.
While the lawyer worked through the calculations with a serious expression, the three of them huddled near the door, whispering and grinning like kids on Christmas morning.
Miles’s mom gently placed a hand on Serena’s stomach, a tender smile spreading across her face.
“With this kind of money, my grandson won’t just live well this life—he’ll live well in the next one too.”
Miles’s dad nodded enthusiastically.
“We’ve worked hard our whole lives. It’s about time we enjoy ourselves.”
“My son was a genius at making money,” Miles’s mom added, practically glowing with pride. “I’ve already planned it out—three luxury villas, fifty live-in staff, and a fleet of ten cars…”
Serena lowered her eyes demurely, her voice soft and sweet.
“Once the baby’s born, we can all live together."
"I’ll never marry again—Miles was the love of my life. My only goal now is to raise our son the best I can.”
Their dreams of newfound wealth were interrupted by the lawyer clearing his throat.
“I’ve completed the calculations,” he said.
Miles’s parents rushed forward, practically tripping over themselves.
“How much?!”
The lawyer read out the figure.
“Two hundred and eighty million dollars.”
“Two hundred and eighty… what?!” Miles’s mom stammered, her voice shaking.
“I’ve never even seen that much money before,” she whispered, her eyes wide with disbelief.
Then, just as quickly, her expression turned cold.
She thrust her hand out toward me, her tone icy.
“Lila, transfer the money. Now. If you don’t, I’ll call the cops."
'And I’ll take you to court. Lawyers don’t mess around.”
I didn’t react, my voice calm.
“Of course. Let me get it for you.”
I turned and walked to a cabinet.
Behind me, Miles’s mom exhaled in relief.
“We’re rich,” she murmured, almost giddy.
“Rich! Let’s see who dares to look down on us now.”
Serena chimed in sweetly, “Mom, you’re officially a millionaire now.”
Miles’s mom couldn’t hold back her excitement any longer, bursting into laughter.
I opened a drawer, pulled out a piece of paper, and handed it to her.
“Is this enough for you?”
She blinked at the paper, her confusion quickly turning to anger.
“What… what is this?”
I smiled, unbothered. “Take a closer look.”
When she finally realized what it was—the IOU from the police station—her face twisted in rage.
“You little—Lila, I’ll kill you!” she screamed, lunging at me.
I stepped aside easily, and she hit the floor hard.
Serena’s face had turned ghostly pale.
She stared at the paper, her voice trembling.
“Mom… Dad… what were you thinking? How could you do something so reckless?”
Miles’s dad grabbed the IOU, his fury barely contained.
“I don’t care what tricks you pull, Lila. We’re getting that $280 million, one way or another!”
I calmly folded the paper and tucked it away.
“You hired a lawyer, didn’t you?"
"Why don’t you ask him how much prison time you’ll get for not paying back that IOU?”
The lawyer took the paper from me, his face darkening as he read it.
“You didn’t tell me about this,” he said, glaring at Miles’s parents.
“If I’d known, I wouldn’t have taken your case."
"As it stands, you owe Mrs. Rivers $10 million. And if you can’t pay, I’ll make sure she files charges. You’ll be in prison for life.”
Miles’s mom collapsed to the floor, wailing dramatically.
“This is a nightmare! A tragedy! We were so close… How could this happen to me?”
I looked down at her, my expression cold.
“When are you planning to pay me back?”
She scrambled to her feet, dragging Miles’s dad and Serena with her.
“Lila, we don’t have the money."
"You can kill us if you want, but we can’t pay!” she screamed as they made their way to the door.
“Wait,” I said, stopping them in their tracks. I pointed to a box on the table.
“Take that with you. It’s Miles’s ashes.”
Serena, tears streaming down her face, walked over and picked up the urn.
Without another word, the three of them stumbled out the door, slamming it behind them.
The lawyer let out a long, tired sigh.
“I should’ve known better than to take their case."
"I skipped my New Year’s dinner for this nonsense. What a waste.”
I chuckled.
“Consider it a lesson learned. Want me to help you get even?”
