A few days later, Chloe was at it again—begging me to tag along.
Liam had set up another get-together, specifically inviting Chloe and telling her to bring her roommates.
"Sarah, pleeease," she whined, hands clasped like she was praying. "Just come with me!"
I groaned from my bunk. "Liam said you could bring your roommates, right? So technically, anyone in the dorm can go. Why don't you ask them? Whoever's dying to hang out with Liam can go."
That got everyone's attention. Turns out, Chloe had kept the invite to herself. Now that the cat was out of the bag, the whole room erupted in chatter. By the end of it, every single one of them had agreed to go—except me.
Lucy even came over to plead with me. "Come on, Sarah, everyone's going. We're in college now—time to actually live a little!"
Her words made me pause. It had been almost a month since I'd come back, and my feelings for Liam had settled into something quiet, like still water. Maybe facing him head-on would finally break whatever weird spell he had over me.
Besides, this time, without the ring's magic and with my ridiculously gorgeous roommates around, I'd be invisible. Free food, zero attention—sounded perfect.
Once I caved, I didn't even bother with makeup. Hoodie, jeans, messy ponytail—done. Fresh-faced and zero-effort. Liam's friends came to pick us up, and just like I'd hoped, I might as well have been a ghost. No small talk, no awkward introductions. I slipped into the restaurant unnoticed.
Liam was already there, tucked into a corner. Even in simple clothes, his stupidly handsome face made everything look designer. Rich, gorgeous, and effortlessly cool—the kind of guy who made every girl's pulse skip.
I'd barely sat down when Chloe elbowed me, whispering excitedly, "Sarah… is Liam looking at us?"
I glanced up—and locked eyes with him. His frown was sharp, his gaze intense, like he was trying to see something in me. My stomach twisted. "Yeah," I muttered. "He's looking at you."
I wasn't much of a talker, so when the food arrived, I tuned out the chatter and focused on my plate.
Until Lucy nudged me, her neck flushing pink. "Sarah…"
I looked up. The whole table was staring at me. Liam's expression was stormy, his lips curled in a cold smirk.
"Sarah," Lucy whispered, "Liam just tried to say hi to you…"
Liam let out a dry chuckle, amusement glinting in his eyes. "Chloe, is your friend starving? How long's it been since she ate?"
Silence. Jake Hayes, one of Liam's buddies, jumped in to smooth things over. "Liam, man, you're just worried there's not enough food, right? Waiter—let's get a few more dishes."
Liam didn't answer. I wiped my mouth, stood, and forced a polite smile. "Sorry. Skipped lunch—was way hungrier than I thought. Penalty drink on me. Don't let me ruin the vibe."
I grabbed a soda and downed it. But Liam's scowl only deepened.
"Soda?" His voice dripped with disdain. "That's not much of a toast."
