A knot of dread twisted in my gut as I frowned. "What are you talking about?"
Liam clenched his jaw. "You know damn well what I mean."
I went quiet, a crazy idea taking root. If I'd traveled six months back... could Liam have done the same? If so, his anger, his accusations—it all clicked in the worst way possible.
My head spun. The universe really loves its sick jokes, I thought. But I was done with Liam. Time to play dumb. "I have zero clue what you're implying. There's nothing between Jake and me—I'm not interested. Make sure he gets the message and leaves me alone."
The words came out sharp, laced with irritation. Inside, I whispered an apology to Jake. This was the only way. To cut ties with Liam meant cutting off his friends too. This time around, I just wanted peace. I was nobody special—certainly not meant for their world of golden boys.
"You—!" Liam looked ready to explode. "How can you lie straight to my face? You chased after Jake, and now you're tossing him aside?"
I arched a brow, smirking. "Chased him? Weren't you the one warning him about me? Well, guess what? I don't care to play games with him—or any of you. We're not friends. Stay out of my life."
Liam scoffed. "Trust me, I plan to."
"Absolutely," I deadpanned.
That absolutely was my goodbye. Liam, let's never cross paths again.
He opened his mouth like he wanted to say more, but nothing came out.
I turned and walked off. Jake, still confused, tried reaching out a few times before finally giving up. When he cornered me by the classroom door one day, his face was haggard, dark circles under his eyes.
"Sarah, please—just talk to me."
I sighed. "I told you to stop. I'm not interested."
His expression crumpled. "Is this because of Liam? Whatever he said—it's not how I feel. Don't let him get in your head."
"Liam has nothing to do with it," I said coldly. "I'm just not into you. Focus on your own life, Jake."
He forced a shaky smile. "Can't we at least be friends?"
Guilt pinched me, but I held firm. "No. Leave me alone."
Half the hallway saw the exchange—including my roommate, Chloe.
That night, I overheard her gossiping before I even opened our dorm door.
"Okay, but seriously—what does Jake see in Sarah?" Chloe mused. "She's so... average. And he's, like, ridiculously hot. How does she get to reject him? The world makes no sense."
I paused, biting back a laugh. Honestly? I wondered the same. Without the ring's magic, Jake shouldn't have glanced twice at me.
Lucy chimed in, "Maybe he's into personality? Hey, how's it going with Liam? You've been hanging out nonstop."
Chloe's tone turned stiff. "It's great."
"So when's he making it official?" Lucy pressed.
"We're taking it slow," Chloe deflected.
Hearing the subject change, I walked in. They froze, then plastered on smiles. Chloe, ever the drama queen, pounced immediately.
"Sarah! Did Jake confess to you?"
I played dumb, flashing a polite smile. Surface-level civility was all I needed for the next four years. "What? No. He just needed help with homework. Why would he like me?"
Chloe's eyes narrowed. "So you're really not into him?"
"Not even a little. My only crush right now is on my textbooks."
