I'd once asked Liam what I looked like through his eyes.
He'd told me I had a radiant smile and pearly teeth—beautiful as an angel.
I'd laughed it off, never taking him seriously. But now, I needed to know the truth.
I handed him a piece of paper and a pencil. "Draw Sarah as you see her in your mind."
Liam froze. "So you're finally confessing to me."
"Just draw her," I pressed.
He took the paper and pencil but stood there, paralyzed. Not a single stroke.
I frowned. "If you can't do it, we'll find someone who can."
Liam's grip on the pencil trembled. Then, suddenly, his whole body shook. He gasped, his breath ragged, before hurling the paper and pencil to the floor.
His eyes locked onto mine—wild with fear, drowning in despair. "I don't remember her," he choked out, voice breaking. "I... I can't remember her...!"
"That face—it's become yours!" He lunged forward, grabbing my collar. "Give her back to me! Give me back my Sarah!"
He slammed me against the wall. I stayed silent, watching him unravel until he collapsed into desperate pleas.
"Please... give her back. I miss her so much. I miss her..."
His sobs clawed at my chest, stirring a dull, familiar ache.
Softly, barely above a whisper, I said, "Your Sarah is gone."
Liam went still. "Where did she go?"
"The girl who loved you is gone. Now, she doesn't. So your Sarah disappeared."
As I spoke, Liam's gaze lingered on my face, realization dawning. "She... is you, isn't she?"
Right then, I pulled out the ring.
Liam recognized it instantly—the one I always wore.
His breath hitched. "Where did you get that?"
I held it in my palm, letting the truth glint between us. "I found it. Inside the box was a manual."
"It said, 'Wear this, and you'll become the ideal version of your secret crush.'"
"The me from college was an ugly duckling. So my fantasy? The most popular guy on campus—you, Liam."
He snatched the ring like a man possessed, swallowing every word without hesitation. "Sarah, please—put it on. Just once. Let me see her again."
I met his desperation with ice. Then, slowly, I took the ring and slid it onto my finger.
Nothing happened.
Liam's hope shattered. "No change... You lied to me!"
