After transferring to the new hospital, I threw myself into my work with relentless dedication. My efforts didn't go unnoticed—within just six months, I earned a promotion and became one of the hospital's top physicians.
Meanwhile, gossip from my old workplace reached me: Damon and Carol had been suspended. Apparently, after I left, Damon started pulling away from Carol, and she didn't take it well. She confronted him daily, their screaming matches disrupting patient care. One incident even sent a patient into shock—thankfully, other doctors intervened before things turned catastrophic. Their unprofessionalism was the last straw, and the hospital dismissed them both.
But Carol's downward spiral didn't stop there. Consumed by bitterness, she became obsessed with Damon. When he refused to take her back, she turned vindictive. She sabotaged his business deals, leaked company secrets to a competitor, and ultimately destroyed his company. Damon, never one to back down, sued her into oblivion. She lost everything—her freedom included—when she landed behind bars.
Just as the dust settled, I received an incredible offer from an overseas hospital. On the day of my departure, Damon showed up at the airport, disheveled and out of breath. Six months had aged him—his usual confidence was gone, replaced by exhaustion.
"I'm really happy for you," he said, forcing a smile even as his eyes welled up.
"Thank you," I replied softly. There was nothing else to say.
As I walked toward the boarding gate, I glanced back one last time. Damon stood frozen, still smiling through his tears.
He had loved me.
He never meant to betray me.
So how had everything fallen apart so completely?
