In the early days of our marriage, we bickered like any other couple—over little things that didn't really matter. But Damon always caved first, showering me with flowers and sweets until I couldn't stay mad. I was clingy back then, texting him constantly, and we were happy in that ordinary, messy-in-love kind of way.
Then everything changed.
I kept sharing every detail of my day with him, but he started finding me annoying. Because by then, there was Carol.
She was right there in his department, sharing moments with him face-to-face—no screens, no floors between them. Just easy, intimate conversation.
The first time I met Damon, I was bored and tagged along with my dad to his hospital department. Damon stood out immediately—blonde hair tousled over his forehead, lab coat wrinkled like he'd slept in it, all rugged charm and sharp intelligence. I was hooked.
After that, I suddenly became very interested in my dad's work. I showed up so often even my no-nonsense father raised an eyebrow.
"Who's caught your eye?" he asked dryly.
I grinned and nodded toward Damon, hunched over a microscope, completely absorbed.
With my dad's nudge, Damon and I grew closer. Coffee breaks turned into dinners, then movie dates.
Then came the day a patient's family member stormed in with a knife, slashing at anyone in his path.
I stepped out of surgery, oblivious, and nearly walked right into him. The glint of the blade registered too late—but Damon lunged, tackling me to the ground. The knife whizzed past where I'd been standing.
After that, we were inseparable. He brought me breakfast every morning, ate lunch with me every day. Even my dad approved.
I thought we'd always be like that.
Then Carol came back.
Rumor was, Damon had chased her in college, but she'd turned him down. They stayed friends, though, even after jobs pulled them to different cities.
Now they were reunited, and suddenly, their old connection flared back to life.
Damon had always drawn attention—women at the hospital flirted, but I never worried. I knew he loved me.
But Carol? She was different.
She was the one he'd actually pursued. The one who'd stayed in his life as a friend. And now she was here, every day, in ways I couldn't be.
