Called it.
Just got back from submitting my resignation to HR when I found Isabelle sitting on Kieran's office couch with swollen red lips.
My coworker whispered, "Savannah, the princess ate your cake and had an allergic reaction. Says you did it on purpose."
I'd bought afternoon treats for everyone since I was leaving.
Just some random fruit-filled cake.
Kieran looked at me coldly. "You're always so careful. How could you forget Bella's mango allergy?"
"Replacing you with her was my decision. Blame me if you want."
Isabelle held up a compact mirror, checking her reflection while crying.
"I have a reunion tonight—how can I show my face like this?"
"You got caught hooking up with some guy and now you're taking it out on me, right Savannah?"
I mentally rolled my eyes.
"Did I offer you cake?"
"Nope. You got greedy and grabbed it yourself. My fault somehow?"
Isabelle's mention of "some guy" made Kieran's eyes darken.
"Savannah, your current state isn't suitable for work. Take some time off."
I laughed coldly. "You're right. I won't be in tomorrow."
Kieran, who'd never been talked back to like this, got pissy.
"Fine, don't come in. Handle it through HR."
Before, whenever he got mad like this, I'd fold immediately. Coddle him like some pathetic doormat.
Because I thought he was my partner, my family.
Grandma always said family should forgive each other.
But he only treated Isabelle like family—or whatever she was to him.
I smiled. "Sure thing."
Kieran didn't expect that reaction.
"Get the HR manager in here."
The manager rushed over, adjusting his glasses nervously.
"Mr. O'Connor, Savannah submitted her resignation at lunch."
Kieran's pupils contracted. "What?"
The manager glanced at me, then told the truth: "She said she's leaving to get married. Wedding's next month."
Isabelle angrily clawed at the couch leather.
Kieran's expression softened.
"Oh, that's what this is about."
"Move back in tonight. We need to go over the guest list for the wedding."
"By the way, Bella's sleeping in your old room. You'll take a different one."
He thought I was marrying him?
What planet was he on?
Obviously I wasn't moving back.
My phone had an angry text from Kieran.
[Savannah, don't test my patience.]
[Make me cancel another wedding and I'll never marry you, even if you beg.]
He didn't contact me after that.
Classic Kieran—too proud for his own good.
Every fight, I was always the one who apologized first.
If I hadn't started dating Liam, I never would've known guys could actually treasure their girlfriends.
"Liam, stop this. I'm not used to it."
His long fingers worked through the water, gently massaging my toes.
"Can't wash my wife's feet?"
"My grandpa used to do this for my grandma when they were young."
"Just relax and enjoy yourself."
I watched the top of his head quietly.
"Liam, did I save your life or something? Why do you like me this much for no reason?"
He looked up and smiled.
I'd noticed he smiled way more when he was with me.
"Yeah, you actually did save my life."
