He severed all other possibilities in my life, luring me into signing that contract.
He buried my happiness within this gilded cage.
I remained silent for a moment before speaking. “I don’t blame you. Back then, I made that choice willingly. I have no one to blame.”
“I spoiled Cassian. Whatever fate awaits him in the future will be of his own making. I dare not hope that you will return to his side, but I only ask that when he is destitute, you give him a meal to eat.”
The lawyer beside him handed me a contract.
Thomas was prepared to transfer most of his shares and assets to me. He even wanted to entrust the company to me, leaving Cassian with only a villa and a small number of shares.
I chuckled softly and shook my head. “This responsibility is too great. I cannot bear it. More importantly, I have already wasted seven years of my life on Cassian. From now on, I just want to live for myself and have nothing more to do with him.”
Thomas truly doted on his grandson, thinking only of paving the way for him even on his deathbed. Even if it meant sacrificing someone else’s life, he didn’t care.
But the person I was now would no longer fall for Cassian’s sweet words, nor would I be swayed by Thomas’s sugar-coated favors.
I had come to fully understand. Every so-called gift of fate came with a hidden price.
Seeing my firm resolve, Thomas coughed violently.
Cassian’s emotions were also stirred. He looked at me with reddened eyes, wanting to say something, but Thomas waved his hand to stop him.
I bowed to him, unwilling to stay any longer.
As I reached the door, I heard Thomas’s helpless and sorrowful reprimand.
“Give up. All the wealth of the Harland Family can’t bring her back. Cassian, your mistakes run too deep.”
Then, a sharp alarm sounded.
Thomas, who had spent his whole life exhausting himself for the Harland Family, finally ended his days in regret.
I asked the doctor to send a funeral wreath for Thomas, putting an end to all the entanglements between me and the Harland Family.
As I reached the intersection, Cassian came chasing after me again.
On the bustling roadside, he knelt before me.
“Leona, Grandpa is gone. I only have you left. I know I was wrong. I’m willing to change. What do I have to do for you to come back to me?”
It was clear that this time, his remorse and apology were sincere. But I had heard such promises far too many times in the past seven years.
I watched as children ran past on the street and an old woman wiped the sweat off a little one's forehead.
After a long silence, I slowly spoke. "Unless… time rewinds and the dead come back to life."
Knowing he was powerless, Cassian broke down in sobs like a spoiled child, trying to use tears to get what he wanted.
I ignored him.
Amidst his sorrowful cries, I casually hailed a taxi.
The car carried me toward the rising sun without hesitation, without looking back.
