Under the watchful eyes of family and friends, we walked step by step toward the chapel.
Just as the priest began the ceremony, the trash showed up.
"Zelda! Please, give Harper back to me!"
Grace was standing there in tattered clothes, her once white dress now covered in mud and even her hair was in disarray.
"What’s going on here? I heard Harper hasn’t been home for a long time! Could it be that he’s really with Zelda?"
"If that's the case, it’s disgusting! Mixing with other men and then showing up here to get married!"
Hearing the murmurs from the crowd, Axel was so angry. He was about to step forward, but I stopped him.
I whispered something in his ear and he smiled, nodded and then walked out.
Now, it was time for me to have a good talk with Grace.
"Grace, your husband hasn’t come home and instead of looking for him, you’re here trying to ruin my wedding? Do you really think the Frost Family and the Knight Family are easy targets?"
My words made Grace tremble. She seemed to have forgotten that the power of our two families was something she couldn’t compete with as a single woman.
Seeing herself about to be on the losing side, Grace's eyes flickered and she quickly came up with another tactic.
"I'm not trying to go against your families. It's just that everyone knows that you have always liked Harper. I can accept it, but I only ask you to give Harper back to me!"
I sneered inwardly. She was such a typical sly woman, turning herself into the victim with just a few words, even looking pitiful.
"Vile woman! What are you saying? I think you're looking for trouble!" My father couldn’t help but speak, but I shot him a look, signaling him to remain quiet.
"Grace, you should understand that the thing you treat as a treasure may not be everyone’s treasure! To you, Harper might be the rich man of a prominent family, but to me, he's just a man without any sense of responsibility. How could someone like him compare to Axel?" I said.
At this moment, Axel, who had just returned from handling some business, overheard my praise and instantly straightened his back, his confidence boosted.
"Hey! Your husband's been found. If you go look for him now, you might get a surprise!" Axel looked at Grace with a mischievous gleam in his eyes.
I handed her the address and Axel and I exchanged a knowing smile.
Actually, I had sent Axel to do that earlier because, based on my understanding of Harper, he was probably staying at a hotel near his family’s residence. As for the "surprise" Axel mentioned, I guessed he might be up to something mischievous, but I didn't expose it. After all, if they dared to cause a scene at my wedding, they had to feel the repercussions of our retaliation.
Upon hearing that Harper had been found, Grace immediately scrambled to her feet and rushed out.
After this little interruption, our wedding proceeded.
Later that night, we returned to our new home.
"Do you regret marrying me?" Axel asked, already drunk, his cheeks flushed and his voice slurred.
"Regret? It's too late now," I replied with a slight smile.
Axel looked at me with a confusion in his eyes, before he collapsed and fell into a deep sleep.
People said the first night of marriage was difficult to sleep through. I was no exception. As I lay there, Axel was soundly sleeping beside me, my mind wandered back over the past few days.
It felt like a dream, from the time I was with Harper, deeply in love, to now, when we were both with someone else.
Perhaps this was our fate. Starting tonight, I would begin a new life and Harper became a thing of the past.
From the moment he chose to find Grace in front of everyone, from the moment he married her, that moment marked the end of our connection.
