David looked as if he had been struck by lightning, "Are you saying… Nadine never abandoned me?"
I didn’t answer. Instead, I simply said, "It’s all in the past. All I ask now is that you never come looking for me again."
Tyler understood what I meant. His cries echoed through the air.
"Mom, you can’t leave me!"
For the last time, I knelt down and wiped the tears from his face.
"This is my final lesson to you—learn to take responsibility for your actions."
With that, I turned and walked into the research institute. I never looked back at the two lost, broken figures behind me.
Perhaps out of guilt, they never appeared again.
Instead, I received a video message—a recorded apology from my parents. I barely watched a few seconds before shutting it off.
Shortly after, the institute received a massive research grant—one that was specifically allocated to me. I didn’t decline. I accepted it all. They owed me this much.
With funding secured, my project advanced smoothly.
On the day of the press conference announcing our research breakthrough, I delivered the keynote speech on behalf of the institute. In the audience, David sat slumped in exhaustion, holding Tyler in his arms. The two of them watched me, unblinking.
But after the event ended, they didn’t come to me. Instead, someone delivered a bouquet of flowers. Tucked inside was a small card, written in the same precise handwriting I had once painstakingly taught Tyler.
Tyler Gunn: [Mom, may you shine brighter than the stars.]
Beneath it, in smaller characters, was another line.
Tyler Gunn: [And… I’m sorry. This is the last time I’ll call you ‘Mom.’ You were right. You were never meant to belong to me and Dad.]
I smiled softly and tucked the card into my bag.
Ten years of entanglement had finally unraveled.
Now, my new life could truly begin.
