His eyes only lingered on my face for a second before he pulled out his phone and made a call.
Everyone said this CEO loved his wife.
But when I brought up divorce, his eyes held nothing but silent approval.
Of course. He and Ivy were the same kind of people.
Try to threaten people like them, and you’ll always end up paying the price yourself.
Just like now—Ivy only got slapped twice and ended up resting in bed pretending to be not feeling well.
But I was the one with a bloodied head, barely managing to stay conscious as I waited for the divorce papers to arrive.
His people were fast.
I gritted my teeth and signed, but before I could even stand up, the blood loss caught up with me, and I passed out.
In the haze of a dream, I saw that clean-cut, young boy reaching out a hand toward me.
The setting sun cast golden light on his figure, and at that moment, I thought I saw a god.
His palm was warm and steady as he effortlessly helped me up.
The faint scent of soap filled my nose. I relaxed and closed my eyes.
But then, I heard him chuckle softly in my ear.
“Is that all you’ve got, Cordelia?”
When I jolted awake, I was in the backseat of a speeding car, soaked in sweat.
It was already dark outside.
I struggled to sit up, only to realize that at some point, my hands and feet had been tightly bound.
From the driver’s seat, I recognized Jayden’s profile.
My voice was hoarse as I forced the words out. “Where… are you taking me?”
His voice trembled almost imperceptibly.
“I’m sorry, Cordelia.”
“Someone’s trying to kill Ivy… I can’t let her walk into that,” he mumbled worriedly.
For a moment, he sounded guilty. “I know it’s not fair to you, but I don’t have any other choice.”
“Don’t worry,” he added quickly, as if that would make any of it better. “I heard that man never touches women who’ve already been with someone else. And now that you’re injured, I made a deal with him. He’ll come pick you up in thirty days. Just think of it as a place to recover.”
For a few seconds, there was nothing but the sound of my own ragged breathing.
“Jayden… are you seriously sending me to die for Ivy?”
“No—no! It’s not like that. He promised he wouldn’t hurt you—”
“Have you ever loved me?”
His voice grew urgent. “Of course, I loved you.”
“You loved me?” I let out a laugh, but the tears came without warning, streaming down my face even as I laughed.
“Your love… It’s sickening! Go love Ivy—I’m done with it,” I snapped. “And I’ll never love you again!”
As the scenery outside the windows grew more and more desolate, I felt a bleak emptiness spread through my chest.
Suddenly, the car screeched to a halt in the middle of the road.
Jayden lit a cigarette.
Smoke swirled through the car. When he saw me frown, he quickly put it out. But the way he flicked the butt out the window was sharp, almost angry.
