Victor and Ruby never saw this coming.
When they turned and saw my face, they froze like deer in headlights.
"Lillian…" Ruby's voice was a shaky whisper, barely audible.
Victor, meanwhile, staggered backward as if he'd seen a ghost, his face draining of color. The moment our eyes met, he let out a strangled cry and crumpled to the floor, his wide eyes wild with panic.
"How are you alive?!" he shrieked. "This isn't possible! We made sure you had no way out—this has to be some kind of sick hallucination!"
"Shut your mouth before you dig yourself deeper!" Ruby snapped, scrambling to regain control. She straightened her shoulders, chin lifted in a pathetic attempt at confidence, and marched toward me.
I didn't hesitate. My hand cracked across her face before she could blink.
Ruby clutched her cheek, gaping at me in shock.
"Did you just—?"
I flexed my stinging fingers, staring her down with icy contempt.
"Yeah, I did. And I'd do it again. Homewreckers like you deserve worse."
Victor scrambled to his feet like a kicked dog, eyes darting anywhere but at me.
"Let's all just calm down," the officer cut in, his voice steady. He jerked a thumb toward the door. "If no one's dead, this paperwork's useless. Take your personal drama somewhere else."
I smiled, but my voice was steel.
"No, officer. I'm pressing charges—attempted murder and insurance fraud."
Victor's face twisted in rage. "You've got no proof!" he snarled, lunging at me. "This is slander!"
The officers tackled him before he got two steps.
I stepped closer, holding up a USB drive between my fingers.
"Proof? It's all right here. You and Ruby making out in the hotel hallway the night you tried to drown me. The forged insurance docs. Every dirty detail."
Victor scoffed, but his voice wavered. "That just proves I cheated! And that file could be anything! Witnesses saw you go into the water—you can't pin this on me!"
I tilted my head, clicking my tongue in mock pity.
"Victor, if you hadn't been so busy gloating, you might've noticed these weren't just glasses." I tapped the frame. "Waterproof recorder. Caught every second of your little murder attempt. You're done."
His face went slack as the realization hit. Then, like a cornered animal, he thrashed against the officers' grip.
"You scheming bitch! You set me up!"
His screams faded as they hauled him away.
Later that night, as I packed up Victor's things, my phone buzzed with an unknown number.
"You think you've won?"
Victor's voice sent a chill down my spine.
He was supposed to be locked up.
Before I could speak, he hissed, "We've got friends in high places. Someone pulled strings—said you framed me. So watch your back, sweetheart. Your turn's coming."
The line went dead.
