I stared at him, my face an unreadable mask.
This was the man who'd shown no mercy when he tried to kill me, and now he had the nerve to ask for my help? The sheer audacity would've been funny if it wasn't so pathetic.
"Call the police if you're really worried about Ruby," I said, my voice ice-cold.
Victor's face contorted with rage. "How can you be so cold? I'm your husband! Ruby's your friend! You're just going to stand there and do nothing? You'll regret this!"
"Cold?" I let out a bitter laugh. "You left me for dead, Victor. Consider this karma doing its job."
His tirade continued—kicking my door, hurling insults—but I stood my ground. Eventually, he slunk away like the coward he was.
By morning, the police called with news: Victor and Ruby had turned themselves in. Whatever Richard had put them through must have been unbearable.
Ruby was in bad shape—barely clinging to life in the hospital. Victor looked like he'd aged twenty years overnight, his once-polished appearance reduced to a hollowed-out shell.
When he spotted me at the station, those dead eyes suddenly burned with hatred. "You heartless bitch! This is all your fault! If it weren't for you, Ruby wouldn't be fighting for her life right now!"
He charged at me, but the officers yanked him back.
Funny—there was a time when seeing Victor in pain would've shattered me. Now? All I felt was cold, quiet satisfaction.
As they forced him into a chair, his shoulders slumped, tears streaming down his face. While I finished my statement, he suddenly collapsed to his knees, sobbing like a child.
"Lillian, I was blind! I regret everything! Please—think of all our years together. Don't press charges... I've got nowhere left to go!"
This broken mess was the same man who'd once dominated every argument, towering over me with contempt. Now he was groveling at my feet.
I took a step back, shaking my head. "You tried to kill me and commit fraud, Victor. Some things can't be forgiven."
His wails followed me as I walked away without a backward glance.
At the trial, Ruby stood beside Victor as his co-defendant—until she suddenly turned on him.
"Your Honor, I'm innocent! This was all Victor Bennett's scheme! He forced me—held a knife to my throat!"
Victor's face went slack with shock. "You lying whore!" he roared, launching himself at her. His hands closed around her throat before the bailiffs could react.
By the time they dragged him off, Ruby was gasping, her face purple. Between coughs, she wheezed, "I'll testify! I'll tell you everything!"
The courtroom erupted as Victor screamed, "Ruby Monroe, you're out of your goddamn mind!"
The judge had no choice but to call an immediate recess amid the chaos.
