My lawyer's call came unexpectedly - Victor wanted to meet. Claimed he had some long-buried secret to spill.
I showed up.
The moment I stepped into that sterile visitation room, Victor's face lit up with that pathetic, hopeful look of his.
"You came," he said, voice dripping with desperate eagerness.
I took my seat, keeping my expression as cold as the prison walls around us.
"You said you had something to say. Spit it out - I don't have all day."
Victor clenched his jaw, wrestling with whatever conscience he had left. Then came the sharp exhale. The moment of truth.
"Your sister's death wasn't an accident. It was Ruby."
The words hit me like a sledgehammer to the chest. My hands balled into fists so tight my nails bit into my palms. The air left my lungs like I'd been sucker-punched.
My sister had been my whole world after we lost our parents. Then five years ago, some drunk driver supposedly took her from me.
Victor leaned in, voice dropping to that slimy whisper I used to find charming. "She was Ruby's teacher. Your sister didn't tolerate Ruby's lazy ass. So that snowy night, Ruby paid some street trash to cut the brake lines. The crash didn't kill her though. Ruby got scared she might survive... so she torched the car."
My stomach turned, but the bastard wasn't done.
"She made me get close to you afterward. My job? Make sure any evidence disappeared. Keep you in the dark."
I gripped the table until my knuckles turned white, the memories crashing over me like a tidal wave.
After my sister died, I'd been drowning. Ready to check out completely. Then along came Prince Charming Victor with his perfect timing, his jokes, his strong arms pulling me back from the edge.
Turns out he wasn't my lifeline - he was part of the anchor dragging me under.
Now this snake had the nerve to lean forward with those puppy-dog eyes. "I came clean. That counts for something, right? Maybe when I get out... we could start over? I'd do right by you this time."
"Are you fucking kidding me?"
The words exploded out of me, raw and shaking with rage.
Victor blinked like I'd slapped him. "What?"
"I said ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?" My voice ricocheted off the concrete walls. "I hope you die in here, you piece of shit!"
This man had taken a sledgehammer to my life, and now thought a confession was some get-out-of-jail-free card for his soul?
"I gave you everything!" I screamed, hot tears carving paths down my face. "And you think what? That I'm some pathetic backup plan now that Ruby screwed you over? You make me sick!"
Victor started that weak-ass backpedaling. "It wasn't me! Ruby made me—"
I was already out of my chair. The door slammed behind me with finality.
Some doors stay shut.
