The forest trembled as the sound of engines roared louder—no longer distant. From the northern sky, the first wave descended: metal beasts with burning eyes and wings of fire.
The sky machines broke through the clouds, scanning the ground with bright red beams. Behind them, black-armored soldiers—engineered and enhanced in secret labs—dropped from their crafts into the trees like shadows.
Eron lit the first signal flare. It burst green fire into the sky.
The traps were sprung.
A thunderous boom echoed as the ground explosives ignited—rock and flame launching upward into the air, slamming into the machines, bringing down some of them in a fiery spiral.
“Hold the line!” shouted Dalen, leading his group of bowmen. They launched explosive arrows, their tips rigged with gunpowder. Sky machines burst like thunderclaps above the treetops, raining fire.
The lab-born soldiers charged in, blades and weapons glowing blue. But Marah’s warriors met them at the front lines with sword and shield. Hand-to-hand combat began in the trenches, brutal and chaotic.
Above, Avera climbed the stone watchpoint. She raised her hands, and the tattooed symbol of her bloodline glowed faintly. She whispered the old words the stone guardian taught her.
From deep within the mountains, a low pulse answered—the stirred, sending energy across the land.
Suddenly, the enhanced soldiers faltered—some collapsing from the sudden shock of power.
Dalen looked up, breathless. “She’s doing it.”
Marah sliced down two soldiers and shouted, “Keep pushing! We drive them back tonight!”
But as the village gained ground, the clouds above thickened—and in their center, a much larger sky machine descended slowly.
The AG59 warcraft.
The real battle had only just begun.
