"Do you remember anything yet?" I asked Mateo, sinking in the chair next to him in our office after coming back from a long run. He was busy looking through some emails from the cyber team on the new security updates.
I wanted to spend some time with Myra but I left her alone when I found her asleep and came to see my brother instead.
"No," He answered curtly. He knew what I was talking about without mentioning it. "What do you remember?" He asked me after a strained second of silence.
"I've been forcing myself to remember," I replied, "Though I haven't had much luck. All I see is blood, snow and Myra. I remember the strongest grief I'd ever felt since we lost our parents and then burning with anger. Nothing more than that," I sighed, flipping through my memories again and again in search of answers but as always, I found nothing.
Mateo glanced at me briefly, looking away from the screen.
"What do you think it could be?" He asked pensively. I shrugged.
"I don't know. Nothing about the situation makes sense to me and the thing is that whenever I try to force myself to remember, I keep forgetting even more," I told him. "Though I tried writing everything down somewhere just to keep things in order,"
Mateo nodded at my words absentmindedly, staring back at the screen. A thoughtful silence fell between us as we got lost in our thoughts for the moment.
"Do you think she knows?" Mateo asked after a few moments.
"I believe so," I told him. "She knows,"
"I still don't understand why she destroyed the servers," Mateo said with a deep frown.
"She has also formatted her serves she has here and seems like she's planning to get rid of them as well," I told him.
"But why?" He asked. This was the question that had been bothering me for a long time as well. I had been wondering about it ever since we came back from Kersas.
"I don't know," I replied, "She has been acting odd ever since we woke up with chunks of our memories missing. I think it has something to do with what happened there that day," I told him.
"Do you think her sister blackmailed her into doing so?" Mateo asked and this made me straighten up. I had considered this numerous times but for some reason, this reason didn't seem enough.
"Our Mate is not the kind to get blackmailed," I stated.
"Still, Arika could've found some leverage to use against her and maybe that led Myra to destroy her servers?" Mateo suggested and that could be it too but I didn't remember seeing Arika that day.
"Was Arika there that day?" I asked Mateo and he fell into a dark silence for a few seconds.
"I keep seeing this smallest snippet of memory," Mateo began, "A blurry face that didn't belong to Myra but it's of a woman. My ears ring with someone's laughter and Myra's screams followed by the sound of a gunshot. This is all I could remember after straining my brain,"
"Tell me more", I said.
"It was a feminine and sardonic laugh. I don't remember what Myra was screaming but she sounded terrified and then there was the gunshot. Everything went pitch black after that," Mateo replied with a frown deepening on his face.
"It's alright brother. Don't strain yourself too much. At the end of the day, we are all safe and back home and our mate is marked and sleeping away her heat-fatigue," I said. He nodded but I could tell that he was still churning this in his head. I didn't blame him.
Everything about this was bothering me as well. It was like a riddle whose answer was right on the tip of my tongue but for some reason, I couldn't realise the answer.
"It just doesn't make sense to me why she'd blow up her life's work. She worked hard for it and put herself in so much danger," Mateo echoed my thoughts.
"Only she knows," I sighed. "She definitely knows. Every time I'm with her I have this urge to ask her but then I remember her nightmares and I stop. She's deeply traumatised by whatever seemed to have happened there," I stated and Mateo nodded in agreement.
"She used to have nightmares before too," Mateo wondered out loud.
"Not every night and they were different from these ones. I can tell. I can feel it," I told him.
"I do too," He nodded again before a pained look crossed his face. "We have to talk to her about it,"
"I tried once but she dismissed the topic right away. She could feel it whenever I'm about to bring it up and that seems to get her on the edge. I'm avoiding it for now," I told him.
"Regardless, we have to talk about it soon because it's definitely bothering her deeply. It hurts me to see her like that," Mateo said.
"It hurts me too," I groaned while tapping into the bond to search for something distressing from Myra's side. She was napping after all and could be having one of those nightmares again but I got nothing like that. Everything was calm at the moment. "She knows everything that happened that day and it's haunting her in the dreams," I concluded.
"I second that," Mateo said. "Do you think it's why she blew up her servers? It could be that she got so terrified that she took that decision in haste?"
"I hope that's not the case. She'd regret doing it later. I wouldn't be able to sleep if I blew up my life's worth of work," I said.
"I'd hate that for her too," Mateo said. "Whatever happened, I hope she speaks up about it soon because it's killing me. I could tell from the bond that it's bothering her and tiring her even more,"
"Talking about the bond, do you feel something off about the bond since the last couple of days?" I asked him. It was another thing that was bothering me. Something didn't feel right about the bond. I couldn't tell what it was.
"Our bonds are still new. It's going through a lot of changes to sync us all. Feeling odd is natural at this stage," Mateo stated, "at least that's what I read but I understand what you're talking about,"
"I hope it's nothing worrying. I'd hate it if she had to go back to the hospital. Wait- what if she's traumatised by the explosion itself? I don't think I'd take it well if I got caught in an explosion and lost an arm only to see another explosion and- Myra, you're awake!" I sat up, seeing her standing at the doorframe, wide-eyed.
