Maya was surrounded by enthusiastic villagers, sitting at the table listening to their daily chatter. Under the warm lamplight, everyone's faces were filled with smiles.
In this moment, the loneliness Maya had felt for years seemed to be slowly filled.
Even when she was married to Connor, she had never felt this kind of family atmosphere, but here and now, she could feel it.
After the feast ended, Maya took Lily home.
After Lily fell asleep, Maya was tidying up when the courtyard gate suddenly made a noise.
Maya went to open the door, and when she pulled it open, Ethan was standing outside, out of breath.
He hadn't attended today's feast. The village chief said he'd gone back to his family in the capital because of some emergency.
Though Maya was curious, she didn't ask further. Since she'd already turned him down, there was no need to send mixed signals. But she hadn't expected to see Ethan tonight.
Ethan still had a backpack on and a sheen of sweat on his forehead.
"You drove back through the night?" Maya asked instinctively.
Ethan nodded. "Yeah. I wanted to see you as soon as possible.
Maya, you said your situation is different from mine, you said you're adopting Lily, you said I'd meet someone who truly makes my heart race—but you're the one who makes my heart race.
I get all your concerns though, so I went home.
I told my parents I fell in love with someone—someone kind, beautiful, and fragile.
She was married before, had a child, and now she's adopting another child.
But none of that matters to me at all. What I care about are the wounds she carries.
I want to take care of her, I want to love her, and I want to stay by her side!
My parents said they trust me—anyone I fall in love with must be amazing.
Maya, now you don't have to worry about my family situation. Can you actually consider me as a person?"
After Ethan finished saying everything in one breath, he was breathing heavily. He must have run all the way here after getting out of his car.
Maya stared at Ethan in shock. The streetlight at the village entrance was too dim, but Ethan's gaze was as clear and bright as always—just like that night when he'd caught her as she was falling.
The night was so quiet that Maya could almost hear her own heart beating.
She struggled to find her rationality, to find her voice. "I..."
That night, Maya still didn't agree to Ethan's proposal. She still remembered what she'd said to him then: "I'm tired."
Ethan actually laughed, didn't press for an answer, and just told Maya to get some sleep.
Later, Ethan still came to see Maya every day. First, he helped get Lily back in school, then it was various other reasons—he could always find different excuses to see Maya each day.
And she never said anything about rejecting him again, but didn't dare take a step forward either.
The villagers basically accepted this subtle dynamic between them. The two maintained a status of more than friends but less than lovers.
But Maya was secretly grateful that Ethan stopped pressing her for an answer. She understood—he was giving her time.
Ethan's thoughtfulness always made Maya feel comfortable and warm.
"Aunt Maya, I won!" Lily's voice pulled Maya back to reality—Lily had reached the cemetery first.
Maya smiled. "That's right, you won."
The two of them no longer came to the cemetery every day, but only visited on weekends when Lily was off from school.
Lily accompanied her to visit her daughter, and she had promised at Lily's mother's grave that she would take care of Lily for life.
Lily had also told Maya's daughter that she would stay with Maya in her place.
