Lily was two years older than her daughter, so she always acted like a big sister and would tell Maya's daughter about things that happened at school.
Maya felt that coming to the cemetery was no longer like before, when her heart was filled only with sadness and she couldn't see a future. Now, though she still felt heartache, she would tell her daughter that she was trying hard to live and that they would be mother and daughter again in the next life.
It was getting late, so Maya took Lily's hand as they walked down the mountain together.
Lily had the day off from school, and Maya wanted to make her something delicious.
"Aunt Maya, can we ask Uncle Ethan to come have lunch with us?" Lily looked at Maya tentatively but hopefully.
Maya hesitated for a moment but then nodded. "Okay."
Lily was thrilled and couldn't wait to use the phone watch Maya had just bought her to call Ethan. He quickly replied, "I'm coming over right now. I'll help you and Aunt Maya cook—cooking is too tiring for her to do alone."
Hearing Ethan's voice, Maya unconsciously smiled and quickened her pace down the mountain.
When they reached the village, Maya held Lily's hand as they hurried home, and from far away they could see Ethan at their courtyard gate.
"Uncle Ethan!" Lily ran over happily. Ethan quickly bent down to pick her up. Maya smiled as she walked toward them both, but suddenly noticed a figure standing not far behind Ethan and Lily.
Maya's smile instantly froze, and her feet seemed rooted to the ground. She didn't take another step forward, staring straight at that person.
Ethan and Lily both noticed Maya's unusual behavior. They turned around together and saw a man standing behind them.
The man was wearing an expensive, exquisite suit, and a Bentley was parked in the distance.
"Maya, I finally found you." Connor's gaze fell on Maya, his yearning look clearly indicating he had an extraordinary relationship with her.
Almost every family in the village had a car, but luxury cars were rarely seen.
Connor's appearance had drawn everyone out to stand at their courtyard gates, their eyes moving back and forth between the Bentley, Connor, and Maya.
Connor eagerly walked toward Maya, excitedly reaching out to touch her.
But she dodged to the side, and when she looked up again, her eyes were cold. "I don't know you. Ethan, what are you standing there for? Take Lily inside."
Maya didn't spare Connor another glance.
After Ethan carried Lily into the courtyard, she directly shut the gate, closing the door on visitors.
Everyone in the village knew each other, so gates were rarely closed during the day. Maya's action was quite out of character.
"Is that him?" Ethan asked.
Maya looked at Ethan in front of her and nodded gently.
Seeing Connor appear before her now, her first feeling was just disgust—disgust from inside out, a visceral revulsion with no trace of affection left.
Someone she thought she'd never see again for the rest of her life had suddenly appeared, forcibly dragging the past she was gradually forgetting back in front of her, once again reminding her that there had once been someone who trampled on her life like that.
Maya didn't want to care about why Connor had appeared. She only knew she didn't want to see him again.
Ethan put Lily down. "Lily, go study in your room. Your aunt and I will cook, and we'll call you when it's ready."
"Okay," Lily nodded obediently, and before going inside, she looked at Maya. "Aunt Maya, I'm going to do my homework. If you need any help, just call me."
