The gossip swept over her like a tidal wave. Even though she'd always known how much Nathan loved Claire, hearing it all laid bare left her mind blank.
Her heart felt hollowed out, with cold wind whistling through the emptiness.
When she came back to her senses, Melody realized she had followed Nathan upstairs.
She watched as he led Claire into the penthouse suite. In his eagerness, he hadn't fully closed the door, and their voices carried clearly into the hallway—
"Nathan!" Claire's accusation came through sobs. "I thought you hated me! Weren't you demanding $5,000,000 because I stained your girlfriend's dress? Why would you bid on my virginity?!"
"You still love me... you still love me, don't you..."
Nathan let out a cold laugh. "Love you?"
He grabbed her wrist, his voice low and vicious. "Claire, you've got some nerve. I bought you for two reasons—first, to make you suffer, and second, because your first time should have been mine anyway."
"Need me to remind you how you seduced me back then?"
Every word dripped with hatred, but when he kissed her, it was pure love.
Melody stood frozen outside the door, watching as he pushed Claire onto the bed, tearing at her dress with desperate urgency.
Clothes discarded, breathing intertwined.
In the final moment of possession, a tear slid from the corner of Nathan's eye, landing on Claire's collarbone.
"Nathan, you're crying..." Claire looked stunned.
He gripped her waist tightly, his voice raw. "Shut up."
Melody trembled violently, her nails digging into her palms so deeply she couldn't even feel the pain.
She watched them tangle together late into the night, saw him made love to her again and again, witnessed Claire pass out from exhaustion, and then—the worst part—watched Nathan hold her sleeping form, tenderly kiss her forehead, and whisper her name over and over...
In that moment, Melody finally shattered completely.
Stumbling out of the club in a daze, her vision kept darkening around the edges.
Suddenly, blinding headlights swept toward her.
CRASH!
Unable to dodge in time, she was struck by a car and thrown to the ground, pain instantly engulfing her body.
Through the haze, she heard people shouting, someone calling for an ambulance...
When she regained consciousness, she was in a hospital.
"Thank God you're awake! Miss, you need immediate surgery. Please contact your family to sign the consent forms," a nurse urged, holding paperwork.
Confused and disoriented, Melody instinctively opened her phone contacts and dialed the pinned number.
Only after dialing did she realize she'd called Nathan.
She was about to hang up when the call connected, but instead of Nathan's voice, she heard Claire's breathless words:
"Nathan, your girlfriend's calling... This late, it must be important... Go see her... Let me go... I can't take anymore..."
Then came Nathan's ice-cold response: "Ignore it."
"Claire, I paid for the entire night with you, and we're not done yet. Don't even think about leaving."
What followed were the unmistakable sounds of passionate kissing.
The call ended.
The nurse looked at her awkwardly. "Um... do you have any other family members we can call?"
Melody closed her eyes, trembling as tears streamed down her face. Her heart felt literally torn open, with freezing wind rushing through, chilling her to the bone.
"I'll sign myself... whatever happens... I take full responsibility..."
With shaking hands, she took the pen and carefully signed her name.
Blood from her injured fingers stained the consent form.
As she finished the final stroke, she collapsed into darkness.
