My cheek stung where Dad's palm had made contact just moments before Jonah's phone call came through.
"Madison Hayes, you worthless girl!" Dad's finger trembled as he pointed at me sprawled on the floor. "You can't even keep one man interested!"
"All Jonah said were a few harsh words, and you couldn't even handle that! You just ran away instead of saving face!"
"He hasn't contacted you in a month! Listen to me—even if you have to get on your knees and beg, you will make him change his mind! Our family's entire reputation depends on this engagement!"
I touched my burning cheek, feeling utterly desolate.
The last time I saw Jonah, he'd told all our friends I was nothing more than his "occasional hookup."
Seven years together, and that's what it amounted to. I'd fled the scene just before my tears fell.
Jonah thought I'd embarrassed him, so he blocked my number without a second thought.
My phone's ringtone cut through the tension, startling us both. Under Dad's ice-cold stare, I answered with trembling hands.
"Madison. Be at my place in thirty minutes. We need to talk." Jonah's voice carried its usual lazy arrogance.
Before I could respond, he hung up.
Dad waved dismissively. "This is your last chance, Madison. If you can't secure this relationship with Jonah, you know the consequences."
I bit my lip, quickly fixed my disheveled hair, and rushed out the door.
On the drive to the Blake estate, I twisted the promise ring on my finger. Important conversation? Could it be...was he finally going to propose?
When I arrived at the mansion, I spotted Jonah immediately.
He lounged on a garden bench, his face flushed and clothes rumpled.
Beside him sat a stunning girl, with wide doe eyes and that fresh-faced innocence.
They were kissing, oblivious to the world, as Jonah's long fingers slipped under her pristine white blouse.
I froze, wanting to disappear, but stepped on a dried branch that snapped loudly.
Hearing someone approach, the girl tried to pull away, embarrassed. Jonah just held her tighter, kissing her more passionately.
After what felt like forever, he finally released her swollen lips.
"Right on time. Good girl," he drawled, finally looking up at me with those hazel eyes. "Let me introduce you to Lily Pierce."
I forced my face into something resembling a smile.
"Hi there," Lily said, blushing. "It's nice to meet you."
Jonah stroked her hair adoringly, his eyes full of affection that made my chest tighten. Once upon a time, he'd looked at me that way too.
"Madison, I called you here to let you know that Lily and I are getting married."
His words hit like a thunderbolt. I dug my nails into my palm to stay composed.
Jonah watched me with amusement, clearly enjoying my distress.
"Did you really think I'd marry you after seven years, Madison?" His voice dripped with contempt. "I would never make a woman who miscarried my child my wife."
