When Melody opened her eyes, the sharp smell of antiseptic made her wince.
Nathan sat beside her bed, his suit jacket draped carelessly over the chair, shirt sleeves rolled up to expose his toned forearms.
"Melody!" Seeing her awake, he immediately leaned forward, his warm palm against her forehead. "Are you still in pain?"
Melody instinctively turned away from his touch.
Nathan's hand froze mid-air, his Adam's apple bobbing once.
"I'm so sorry," he said, voice rough. "I had something important last night and missed your call. I had no idea you'd been in an accident... Forgive me, please?"
Important business?
Like screwing Claire all night?
Melody remembered the intimate sounds she'd heard through the phone. A smile twisted her lips as tears splattered onto the pristine sheets.
Nathan, thinking she was in pain, quickly pressed the call button for a doctor.
After examining her, the physician said, "The surgery went well, but you'll need two weeks of complete rest." He paused, giving Nathan a pointed look. "She should have someone looking after her at all times."
Nathan nodded firmly. "I'll be here."
And he wasn't lying. For the days that followed, he barely left her side.
He reserved the entire VIP floor so she could recover in peace.
When she wanted fresh air, he carried her down to the garden, careful not to jostle her.
When she mentioned at 2 AM that she was craving porridge from across town, he drove there without a word, returning with it still warm.
Once upon a time, this would have moved her to tears.
But now, her heart felt completely hollow.
If she hadn't seen with her own eyes how he truly loved Claire, she might have believed his act.
On the day of her discharge, Nathan fastened her seatbelt and said softly, "Melody, I've got a surprise for you."
Before she could respond, his phone rang.
"Nathan, we're having a class reunion tonight. You coming?" The voice on the other end was teasing. "Forget I asked—you never show up to these things anyway..."
"Actually, it's probably better you don't. Claire's gonna be there too. Don't know how that gold-digger has the nerve! Everyone knows she dumped you for that study abroad spot. The whole class can't stand her shallow ass, yet she still shows up like—"
Nathan's fingers stilled, then he suddenly cut in: "I'll be there."
The caller went silent for a beat. "Wait, what? You're coming?"
"Yeah." He glanced at Melody, tone casual. "I'll bring my girlfriend too. She's been in the hospital—it'll be good for her to get out."
His friend laughed. "Awesome! That'll show Claire exactly what she missed out on!"
After hanging up, Nathan turned to Melody with a gentle smile. "Let me take you out to clear your head."
Melody kept her eyes down, fingers trembling slightly.
Clear her head?
Just moments ago, he'd promised her a surprise.
Now? Not a word about it and "clear her head" was just a convenient excuse.
He just wanted to see Claire.
But she didn't call him out. She simply closed her eyes, exhausted.
The reunion was held at a private club, the private room bathed in soft lighting and flowing drinks.
When Nathan walked in with his arm around Melody's waist, the room erupted.
"Holy shit! Nathan actually showed up?!"
"With his girlfriend! Isn't she the one who always brought him water back in school?"
Someone deliberately raised their voice: "What a gorgeous couple! She looks so sweet—way better than certain gold-digging exes!"
In the corner, Claire went pale, her fingers trembling around her glass.
Nathan acted as if he didn't see her, focusing entirely on Melody with ostentatious care.
The moment she sat down, he adjusted a cushion behind her back.
When she sipped her drink, he immediately offered water: "You're still healing—go easy on the alcohol."
Someone hooted: "Damn, Mr. Gray's so whipped! That's true love right there."
Nathan just smiled, gently stroking Melody's hair.
But Melody saw the truth.
His gaze kept drifting to Claire.
Finally, unable to take it anymore, she excused herself to the restroom.
When she emerged, Claire was waiting for her.
"You saw us yesterday at the hotel, didn't you?" Claire's smile was smug. "How did it feel watching Nathan fuck me? You've got some patience, Melody."
Melody dug her nails into her palms but kept her face neutral. "I felt nothing. Excuse me."
"Nothing? Stop acting so high and mighty." Claire suddenly grabbed her wrist. "Listen, if I hadn't made the wrong choice back then, Nathan would still be mine. You're nothing but a thief who took advantage of the situation. I'm back to reclaim what's mine!"
She leaned in, red lips curving upward. "Do you know how much he used to love me? In high school, I casually mentioned wanting cake from across town, and he skipped class to wait in line for three hours. In college, during my period, he stayed on his knees all night massaging my stomach. And now..."
Her voice dropped to a self-satisfied whisper: "He claims to hate me, but last night? He made love to me over and over until dawn. He's so obsessed with me—how could you ever compete?"
Melody's heart quivered.
She slowly looked up at the woman before her.
Before, she'd only silently loved Nathan while watching him adore Claire from afar, never directly confronting her rival.
Even when Claire dumped him for money, Melody had thought: maybe there were extenuating circumstances. Why else would Nathan remain so fixated?
But now, Melody finally understood—this was exactly who Claire was—selfish, materialistic, utterly shameless.
And somehow, Nathan loved her to the point of madness.
"Then I wish you luck," Melody said, yanking her hand free and walking away without looking back.
Back in the private room, everyone was egging each other on to play the "I Have, You Haven't" game.
When they saw Melody return, they quickly pulled her to join. Afraid she wouldn't understand, they specially explained the game rules: all participants hold out five fingers, and take turns saying something they've done. If others haven't done it, they must put down one finger. The first person to put down all five fingers loses.
Claire also followed in and, upon hearing about the game, eagerly came over saying she wanted to play, but no one paid attention to her.
"Melody, game's starting, you go first!"
Melody raised her fingers, remembering Claire's provocation earlier, and suddenly smiled. She didn't need to provoke back. Because of Nathan, she had already let go.
She said softly: "I'm about to get married."
"Haven't done that, put down one finger."
