This sentence is like a bomb, and the private room instantly became quiet, even breathing could be heard clearly.
All eyes focused on Melody, then slowly shifted to Nathan.
Then, the private room erupted with shouts: "Holy shit! Nathan, you proposed? She's not just your girlfriend—she's your fiancée!"
"No, no—she's practically your wife already!"
Everyone laughed and teased, while Claire sat in the corner, knuckles white around her purse strap, eyes red-rimmed.
Nathan's gaze swept over Claire, something dark flickering in his eyes.
He closed his eyes briefly, then sighed, his voice low: "I have no such plans at the moment."
His voice was soft, but it hit Melody like a slap across the face.
In everyone's eyes, they were a couple.
She claimed they were getting married; he publicly denied it.
Wasn't he essentially rejecting her in front of everyone, declaring he had no intention of marrying her?
The others clearly sensed the tension and awkwardly tried to smooth things over: "What's going on with you two? Don't you discuss major decisions like marriage?"
Melody opened her mouth, about to explain—
"Nathan and I aren't actually together."
"I am getting married, but not to him."
Before she could speak, a sharp cracking sound came from above!
"Look out!" someone screamed.
Melody looked up to see an enormous crystal chandelier swaying precariously, about to crash down directly toward her and Claire!
In that split second, Nathan lunged forward—
He grabbed Claire, pulling her protectively into his arms.
While Melody was struck by the full force of the chandelier!
CRASH!
Excruciating pain shot through her body as glass shards sliced her skin, blood immediately soaking through her sleeve.
Chaos erupted around her—someone frantically calling her name, others scrambling to lift the chandelier off her...
And Nathan? He only remembered her after making sure Claire was safe.
He hurried over, his voice filled with guilt: "Melody, I'm so sorry. I grabbed the wrong person..."
Melody looked into his eyes and suddenly laughed, her own eyes reddening.
The wrong person?
She and Claire couldn't be more different—their hair, clothes, height—nothing similar at all.
How could he possibly mistake them?
No, the truth was that in a life-or-death moment, his instinct would always be to save Claire first.
"It's fine. Doesn't hurt."
Perhaps she'd been hurt so many times that she truly couldn't feel the pain anymore.
Nathan didn't believe her and insisted on taking her to the hospital. She shook her head: "It's not serious. I can bandage it myself when I get home. You all keep enjoying yourselves."
She turned to leave, but he scooped her up in his arms.
"You're injured like this—how could I possibly let you go home alone?" His tone was resolute, brooking no refusal. "I'm taking you!"
In the car, Nathan apologized again: "I really grabbed the wrong person. I won't let you get hurt again."
"And about the marriage thing—you're still young. There's no rush."
Melody heard the glaring holes in his explanation but said nothing, just staring out the window at the raindrops beginning to hit the glass.
His phone rang abruptly—Claire calling: "Nate, did you get Melody home safely? Is she okay?"
"The reason I'm calling is... there's someone outside the club asking for my contact information. Should I give it to them or...?"
At her words, Nathan's expression darkened instantly.
His eyes turned stormy as he practically snarled through clenched teeth: "Don't you dare!"
After hanging up, he took a moment to calm his cold fury before turning back to Melody: "I have an urgent matter to attend to. Can you go home first?"
Without waiting for her answer, he handed her an umbrella.
"It's raining. Don't catch cold."
With that, he drove away in a hurry.
Melody stood there, suddenly remembering what he'd said earlier: "You're injured like this—how could I possibly let you go home alone?"
She let out a bitter laugh.
She wasn't sure if she was laughing at herself or at Nathan.
