Jonah's face darkened.
"Madison, I'm not joking. Even if Grandfather orders me to marry you tonight, I won't agree."
"When you're humiliated in front of everyone, do you think the Hayes family will let it slide?"
"Just go home obediently and apologize to Lily. As long as you promise not to cause her trouble, we can go back to how things were before."
Go back to how things were? This guy actually wanted to have both women, enjoying the best of both worlds!
I waved my hand impatiently. "I'm tired of hearing this. Goodbye!"
I turned around, ignoring Jonah's angry calls, and walked away without looking back.
The banquet was about to begin. All the Blake family members had gathered, quietly waiting for the elder Mr. Blake to appear.
My seat was right next to Jonah's. He kept turning to look at me, his expression complicated.
There was anger, confusion, and perhaps even... longing?
I ignored him, focusing on eating the honeydew melon slices on my plate.
Jonah lowered his voice: "If you really want to make a good impression on the Blake family, drop these low-class manners!"
I dramatically picked up the largest piece of melon and put it in my mouth right in front of him, giving him a challenging side-glance.
Furious, Jonah turned away, refusing to look at me anymore.
Finally, the doors to the grand hall opened, and the elder Mr. Blake entered.
He slowly walked to the head of the table and began to speak.
"I've gathered everyone here today to announce three things. The first is a marriage."
Jonah rolled his eyes with an "I told you so" expression, while Victor and his wife looked confused.
A marriage? Wasn't today's family dinner supposed to announce the new head of the Blake family?
The elder Mr. Blake continued: "The bride is Madison of the Hayes family, and the groom is..."
"I object!" Jonah suddenly stood up, startling everyone.
"Jonah, what are you doing? Sit down!" Victor hissed.
"I said I object! I will decide who I marry. I won't accept anyone you arrange for me!"
Jonah glanced sideways at me, expecting to see panic on my face.
But I remained expressionless, sitting calmly as if none of this concerned me.
"Jonah, your rebellion has limits!" the elder Mr. Blake frowned.
"No one is forcing you to marry. You insisted on getting engaged to Lily, causing a citywide scandal, and the Blake family didn't disown her as a daughter-in-law. What are you shouting about now?"
Jonah stood frozen, increasingly confused. No one was forcing him? Then what was this marriage about?
Victor forcibly pushed him back into his seat. The elder Mr. Blake cleared his throat and continued.
"The groom is the head of the Blake family, Vincent!"
