                    The rain grew heavier.
Melody stood at the roadside with her umbrella, but the wind was too strong. The ribs of the umbrella quickly snapped, and rain poured mercilessly down on her.
Completely drenched and unable to hail a cab, she had no choice but to walk home.
The icy rainwater seeped into her wounds, bringing bone-deep pain.
She walked for what felt like forever, until her legs went numb and her vision blurred...
When she finally reached home after walking two hours, she could no longer stay upright. Her vision darkened, and she collapsed heavily onto the floor.
She didn't know how long she had been lying there. When she managed to push herself up, she realized she was still lying on the frigid floor.
The wound on her shoulder throbbed with tearing pain. The hallway clock showed 4 AM, and Nathan's slippers remained neatly arranged in the shoe cabinet.
He hadn't come home all night.
She struggled to her feet, swallowed two fever-reducing pills, and stumbled back to bed.
She had a long dream.
In it, she was seventeen again, secretly following Nathan, her heart pounding as she watched his tall, straight back.
How she wished she could rush forward and grab that bright-eyed version of herself, to tell her...
"Don't fall in love with him. It won't end well."
When she woke, the apartment was still empty.
She picked up her phone to check the time but accidentally saw Claire's social media update:
"Someone locked me in a room, accused me of flirting around, and won't let me out. He's personally standing guard... What do you think his feelings for me are?"
The accompanying photo showed a glimpse of a man's hand with prominent knuckles.
That same hand had once held her gently, calling her "sweetheart."
That hand had stayed awake all night holding hers when she had a fever.
But now, it belonged to Claire.
In the days that followed, Melody stayed home, continuing to pack her belongings.
When Nathan finally returned and saw the suitcases scattered across the floor, his brows furrowed: "What are you doing?"
She lied: "Just seasonal organizing. I'm worried about mildew."
Despite the obvious tension, he didn't question further. He apologized for abandoning her and insisted on taking her to a movie.
"It's that film you've been wanting to see. Consider it my apology," he said softly, his tone leaving no room for refusal.
At the theater, they had barely taken their seats when Melody spotted Claire.
She was sitting in the front row with a stranger, their posture intimate.
Nathan's face immediately darkened. Throughout the entire film, his gaze never left Claire.
Melody suddenly remembered how, in the past, when someone would ask for her number, Nathan would simply smile and ruffle her hair: "My girl's quite popular, isn't she?"
She realized now that when you truly love someone, even jealousy manifests as obsession.
Halfway through the movie, she had completely lost interest and was about to make an excuse to leave when chaos erupted outside.
The fire alarm blared!
"Fire! Everyone run!"
Panic instantly spread through the crowd.
As smoke poured in through the ventilation, Nathan quickly wrapped his jacket around Melody and rushed her outside.
But as soon as they reached safety, he began frantically searching for something—or someone.
Following his gaze, Melody realized the man Claire had been with had made it out alone. Claire was nowhere to be seen...
Before she could process this, Nathan had already abandoned her and rushed over to the man.
"Where's Claire?!" Nathan grabbed the man's collar, roaring, "Why didn't you bring her out?!"
The man, not knowing who Nathan was, stammered in fear: "W-who cares about her? We're just casual acquaintances! In a life-or-death situation, I barely had time to save myself!"
Nathan punched him hard before turning toward the burning building!
Firefighters rushed to stop him: "Sir, you can't go in! We'll handle the rescue—the fire's too intense! You'll die in there!"
"There's no time!"
With bloodshot eyes, he shoved them aside and charged into the inferno without hesitation!
Throughout the entire ordeal, he had completely forgotten that his "official girlfriend" was standing right there.
