Melody stood frozen to the spot, watching helplessly as Nathan disappeared into the thick smoke.
Ten minutes later, a figure emerged stumbling from the inferno—
Nathan carried Claire on his back, her unconscious form draped over his burned flesh. His shirt had been reduced to ashes, revealing raw, bleeding skin underneath.
Yet Claire, still passed out against him, looked immaculate apart from some soot on her dress hem. Not a single hair out of place.
"Ambulance!" Nathan roared before collapsing to his knees, still carefully cradling Claire.
Only after she was safely loaded onto a stretcher did he finally give in to his injuries, passing out cold on the ground.
Melody pressed a hand to her chest, her eyes rimmed red.
The pain was gone. How strange.
The wound Nathan had carved into her heart seemed to be healing at last.
At the hospital, Melody kept vigil all night.
When Nathan finally woke, his first words were: "Where's Claire? Is she okay?"
"She's fine," Melody replied evenly. "They treated her minor injuries, and she left."
He sighed with relief before attempting to explain. "I only saved her because we were acquaintances. I couldn't just let her die—"
"I understand."
Nathan paused, ruffling her hair, believing she'd accepted his explanation.
But what Melody truly understood was how deeply he loved Claire.
Enough to risk his life without hesitation.
For days as Nathan recovered, his eyes constantly drifted toward the door, clearly waiting for someone.
Melody knew exactly who: Claire. But she wouldn't come.
Claire was too skilled at the game of playing hard to get.
Since he couldn't wait for the person he wanted to see, Nathan discharged himself quickly.
By then, only two days remained until Melody's arranged marriage to the Sinclair family.
In the car, just as Melody finished purchasing her plane tickets on her phone, Nathan suddenly mentioned her upcoming birthday, insisting on throwing her a celebration.
"Melody, who do you want to invite? You don't have many friends besides my sister... and she's off God-knows-where these days."
"Since she's marrying into the Sinclair family soon, I don't want to restrict her freedom anymore. What about inviting those classmates from the reunion? You know them well..."
Those classmates—including Claire.
Melody closed her eyes, exhausted. His roundabout way of ensuring Claire would be invited was painfully transparent.
"Whatever you think is best," she conceded.
The birthday celebration was ultimately scheduled aboard a luxury yacht, ostentatiously lavish.
Nathan presented her with a priceless diamond necklace, drawing envious comments from guests about how he spoiled his girlfriend.
Only Melody noticed his gaze constantly tracking the white-dressed figure moving along the deck.
Moments later, Claire approached with a glass of red wine.
"Happy birthday, Melody," she offered with a practiced smile.
Melody felt Nathan's arm around her stiffen instantly.
"Thanks," she replied calmly.
Claire's eyes lingered on the diamond necklace before she suddenly "accidentally" stumbled—
The crimson wine splashed entirely across Melody's designer dress!
"Oh! I'm so sorry!" Claire fumbled for napkins, feigning distress. "It was an accident..."
Nathan frowned. "What the hell are you doing?"
His tone seemed reproachful, yet he couldn't spare even a glance for his girlfriend's ruined dress.
Even as Melody was escorted away to change, he remained oblivious to her departure.
Watching him stand beside Claire, supposedly arguing but clearly just seeking any excuse to keep looking at her, Melody smiled bitterly.
As she followed a crew member down the corridor, Melody reached for the changing room door when suddenly a rough hand clamped over her mouth from behind!
"Mmph!"
She was violently dragged into a storage closet, overwhelmed by the stench of unwashed body odor.
A disheveled man pinned her against the wall, his bloodshot eyes gleaming with predatory intent.
"Miss Bennett was right—you are a beauty," he slurred, tearing at her collar. "She paid me good money to ruin you. Said she wanted to destroy your reputation, ahaha..."
Miss Bennett?
CLAIRE did this?
Melody's mind reeled in shock. She never imagined Claire could be so viciously cruel as to hire beggars to rape her!
