Terror flooded through Melody as she fought desperately, her nails raking bloody tracks down the man's face.
"Fucking bitch!"
A vicious slap landed across her face, leaving her ears ringing. He used the moment to tear at her dress strap, his filthy hand groping beneath her skirt—
CRACK!
She grabbed a fire extinguisher and smashed it against his skull!
As he recoiled in pain, she stumbled out the door, barely keeping her balance.
When Melody finally made it back to the deck, her body battered and her dress torn, the party continued as if nothing had happened.
Nathan stood by the champagne tower with Claire, who giggled behind her hand at something he'd said, her eyes flirtatiously locked on his.
SLAP!
The sharp sound cut through all conversation!
Claire staggered backward, holding her reddening cheek in shock. "You..."
"What the hell?" Nathan grabbed Melody's wrist. "What are you doing?"
She yanked her arm free, her voice shaking: "She hired a man to assault me."
Gasps erupted around them!
Claire's eyes instantly filled with tears. "I did not! Melody, I know you hate me, but to make such horrible accusations..."
Click.
Melody pressed play on her phone recording—
"Miss Bennett sent me... She said she wanted to destroy your reputation!"
The man's vicious laugh was unmistakable.
Nathan's expression darkened dangerously. "Claire!"
"I thought you were just shallow and attention-seeking. I never imagined you could be this vicious. What did Melody ever do to you? Today is her birthday. Inviting you was an act of kindness, and this is how you repay her?"
Faced with Nathan's fury, Claire finally dropped her act.
She suddenly burst into hysterical laughter. "Yes! I did it! All of it!"
"I'm vicious! I'm despicable! But it's all because I love you, Nathan! Can't you see?"
"I wanted her humiliated so she'd leave you. You should be mine! You loved me once..."
"Love? You disgust me!" Nathan spat, shoving her away. "Whatever I felt died the moment you left me. Melody is who I love now. Apologize to her. Now!"
"Apologize? Never! I'd rather die than apologize to her!"
"Then go die!" Nathan snarled.
At those words, Claire froze, her eyes growing wild with hurt.
She stared at him for one long moment, then before anyone could react, she bolted toward the railing.
The sea breeze caught her white dress like the wings of a dying butterfly.
"Nathan, I'll grant your wish!"
With a haunting smile, Claire leapt into the dark waters below!
"CLAIRE!!"
Nathan's scream tore through the night sky—and in the next breath, he dove in after her without hesitation!
When Nathan finally climbed back aboard cradling Claire's unconscious body, everyone on the yacht rushed toward them.
"Quick! Call an ambulance!"
"Mr. Gray is injured!"
In the chaos, no one paid any attention to Melody, the supposed guest of honor.
"Ah..."
Someone from the panicking crowd knocked her to the floor, her palms scraping against the deck.
Nathan ran past her carrying Claire, not sparing her even a glance.
The sea breeze blew her damp hair from her forehead, revealing warm blood—from her struggle with the attacker or from her fresh injuries, she couldn't tell.
Staring at the ambulance disappearing into the distance, she suddenly smiled.
And as she smiled, tears streamed down her face.
Nathan, you said you don't love Claire anymore. You said you love me.
Huh. Who could possibly believe that now?
