Melody went to the police station alone.
She handed over the recording, calmly completed her statement, and filed charges against Claire for soliciting sexual assault.
The officer noted her disheveled hair and the bruises darkening on her arms, his eyes filled with sympathy.
"We'll handle this according to the law."
"Thank you."
Back home, she poured herself a cup of hot water and swallowed two painkillers.
Her phone continuously lit up with notifications—all news about Nathan rushing into the hospital with Claire in his arms.
In the photos, his eyes were wild with concern, arms wrapped protectively around her as if she were made of precious glass.
She turned off her phone, walked into the bathroom, and methodically washed away every trace of blood and violence from her skin.
She wouldn't let herself ache for him anymore.
Early the next morning, just as Melody finished packing her last suitcase for the airport, the front door suddenly swung open.
Nathan walked in, suit jacket draped over his arm, tie loosened, exhaustion evident in the shadows beneath his eyes.
She froze.
Why was he here?
Shouldn't he be at the hospital with Claire?
"Melody," his voice rasped. "You filed charges yesterday?"
In that moment, Melody understood everything.
He'd only come back because of Claire.
She nodded. "If I hadn't escaped quickly enough, I would have been raped."
"People who do wrong things should face consequences, right?"
Nathan frowned slightly, silent for several seconds before saying, "I understand, but she just attempted suicide. She's still very weak..."
"So?" Melody softly interrupted. "Because she jumped off a yacht, I should let her get away with this?"
She stared directly into his eyes. "Didn't you say you hated her? Shouldn't you want her punished more than anyone?"
Nathan hesitated, something complicated flickering in his eyes.
"Yes, I hate her," his voice cracked. "But..."
But you love her more, Melody silently completed his thought.
Nathan took a deep breath, abruptly changing tactics. "Drop the charges."
"Don't you want to get married?" He looked at her, his voice softening. "If you drop the charges, we'll get married right away. Okay?"
Melody's eyes suddenly burned with unshed tears.
He so clearly wanted to break up with her.
Yet now, for Claire's sake, he was even willing to offer marriage.
She was about to tell him she was already marrying someone else when his phone rang.
A nurse's frantic voice came through the speaker: "Mr. Gray, Miss Bennett is awake and destroying things because you're not there. She's extremely unstable..."
Nathan's brow furrowed as he quickly ended the call and grabbed his jacket.
"We'll leave it at that for now. I'm busy these few days," he said without looking back. "When I return, we'll discuss wedding plans."
With that, he was gone, without so much as a backward glance.
Melody stood motionless, watching his figure disappear through the doorway.
Was he really so confident that she loved him so desperately that she'd drop criminal charges the moment he mentioned marriage?
Was he so certain she would always be waiting for him, no matter what?
She slowly looked around the apartment that had once held all her hopes, her gaze landing on the coffee table—
There sat the ceramic mug Nathan had given her, with "Melody's Only" etched on the bottom.
She walked over, dropped it into the trash can, then took out a sticky note from her purse and wrote:
[Nathan, as you wish, we're over. You're free now.]
Her pen hesitated, then added:
[May you and Claire live happily ever after.]
After sticking the note to the refrigerator, she grabbed her suitcase and left without looking back.
On the way to the airport, her phone rang once more.
It was the police station.
"Miss Monroe, Mr. Gary just called saying you intended to drop the charges. Is that true?"
Melody watched the scenery rushing past her window and quietly replied, "No. I'm not dropping anything."
She turned off her phone after hanging up.
As the plane took off, she finally closed her eyes and exhaled a long, deep breath.
Nathan, this time, I'm really letting you go.
