Jackson's attention to detail was impressive. After seeing the wedding dress Melody had brought, all his design proposals were elegant yet simple, striking the perfect balance. While her original choice had come from the city's finest bridal shop, it looked ordinary compared to the designs in his portfolio.
As she was about to discuss her favorite design with Jackson, Nathan's personalized ringtone suddenly played.
It was a custom audio clip she had begged Nathan to record when they first started dating.
"It's me, it's me, your beloved Nathan calling~"
Melody thought she had thrown away everything related to Nathan, but had somehow overlooked this.
"Aren't you going to answer?" Jackson looked up at his hesitant fiancée.
Melody shook her head, placing her phone face-down before continuing their conversation about the wedding dress. "I really like this one, but I think the neckline here..."
She took another sheet of paper to note the details. Had she looked up at that moment, she would have noticed Jackson's attention was entirely focused on her phone.
Beloved Nathan.
Nathan Gray?
Back in her bedroom, Melody had barely unlocked her phone when Nathan's message came through.
[Melody, please answer the phone?]
She sighed deeply. She knew Nathan too well—he wouldn't give up until everything was explained.
As soon as she connected the call, Nathan's urgent voice came through.
"Melody, what's happening with the police? I thought you withdrew the charges. Why did they come to take Claire away today?"
After a moment of silence, Melody gave a soft laugh. "Is that the only reason you're calling?"
"Stop playing around, please. Melody, I'm only helping her because we were classmates. Claire just returned to the country, she's already struggling. How can she build a life with this kind of mark against her?"
"Didn't we agree? After you withdrew the charges, we would get married. Don't you want to be with me anymore?"
Nathan's tone was exceedingly gentle, but it only made Melody want to laugh.
"Nathan, why haven't you been home? Have you been staying with Claire this whole time?"
"I..." Nathan was momentarily speechless. "I can't leave Claire right now, but you have to believe me..."
He lowered his voice, "Don't be angry, okay? You know nothing is happening between us..."
"Who are you talking to, Nathan?" Claire's voice grew closer. "Is that Melody?"
"Nathan, we'll talk when you come home," Melody said firmly.
Without waiting for a response, she ended the call.
Nathan, by the time you return to that house, you'll realize I no longer care what happens between you two.
