Nathan knew he had to go home.
For the past week, he had been taking care of Claire without leaving her side. He told himself it was out of guilt—after all, Claire had jumped into the ocean because of something he'd said. If anything had happened to her, he would have been responsible.
That's how it was. That's all it was.
He was caring for her out of responsibility, nothing more.
But during this week, Melody hadn't reached out to him even once.
Why?
Nathan couldn't decide if Melody's silence was good or bad. Melody was generous, so she wouldn't overthink things. He should have been happy about that.
Yet every night when he opened his phone, her conversation thread remained empty of new messages.
Had she stopped caring about him?
Was she no longer keeping him in her heart?
The thought troubled him deeply.
When the police came to take Claire away, Nathan finally learned that Melody hadn't withdrawn the charges after all.
This was the first news he'd heard about Melody in seven days.
While waiting at a traffic light, Nathan spotted a flower shop. Realizing he hadn't given Melody flowers in a long time, he briefly considered it before stepping out of his car.
The shop owner enthusiastically asked who the flowers were for. Nathan didn't answer. He glanced around, noticed some beautiful roses, and pointed to them.
"Please wrap those roses for me."
The owner nodded and carefully packaged them.
Nathan paced in the shop. The perceptive owner, sensing he might want something more, couldn't resist making additional suggestions.
"We have other beautiful flowers in bloom. Would you like to see them as well?"
Nathan looked around. "Do you have lilies?"
"Yes, certainly!" the owner nodded.
"Make me a bouquet with tulips, lilies, calla lilies, and hyacinths..." After a moment, Nathan added, "Wrap it nicely. It's for a hospital visit."
Yes, bringing flowers to Claire was only because she was sick. Just an afterthought.
With the roses on the passenger seat and the other bouquet in the back, Nathan had it all planned out. When he got home and Melody saw the flowers, he would comfort her, and surely she would forgive Claire.
He took a photo of the roses, intending to send it to Melody, only to find he was blocked.
What?
Nathan couldn't believe it. He looked down to call Melody, but honking from behind interrupted him.
The light had turned green.
Nathan cursed under his breath, scrolling through his call history while driving forward. Just as he dialed, a Cayenne next to him suddenly lost control.
"The number you're calling is unavailable. Please try again later..."
That cold, electronic voice was the last thing Nathan heard.
