With the wedding approaching, Melody—whose parents had passed away years ago—only told Emma about the event.
When the invitation arrived, Emma was vacationing in the Maldives with her boyfriend, Riley.
"Are you absolutely sure about this, Melody?" Emma's voice was backed by the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against rocks. Far from finding it disruptive, Melody found comfort in the blend of ocean sounds and her friend's concerned voice.
"Listen, if you don't want to marry him, there's still time to change your mind," Emma said seriously. During her getaway with her boyfriend, she'd been thinking about this situation. She absolutely refused to watch Melody jump from one bad situation into another.
She couldn't control what her own brother did, but she'd known Melody long enough to recognize her gentle nature—always bearing her burdens quietly, never complaining.
Emma had seen firsthand how much Melody had cared for and sacrificed for her brother over the years. For Melody to suddenly decide to leave, she must have reached her breaking point.
"Don't worry, Emma," Melody assured her, knowing her friend was concerned. "Jackson isn't like the rumors say. He's actually quite pleasant to be around."
"Besides, I really want a home of my own."
Emma paused, understanding exactly what Melody meant. After a long silence, she said, "I can't show up at your wedding—it would be too awkward. But my boyfriend will be there to support you, and I'll be nearby. Don't forget about me, okay? Find a way to sneak me a glass of champagne."
Her voice filled with guilt: "Melody, my brother treated you terribly. Now my own happiness comes at your expense. I don't know how to—"
"Don't talk like that, Emma," Melody gently interrupted. "I've never blamed you, and I don't see this as sacrificing myself."
"What happened with your brother couldn't be forced. He doesn't love me. Choosing to marry Jackson is my own decision."
The rumors about Jackson must have been truly frightening, as Emma's escape had received tacit approval from her parents. As long as the Sinclair family didn't demand Emma's return, they pretended nothing had happened. Emma's parents did love their daughter, but thinking of them made Melody sigh almost inaudibly.
Having lost her parents at an early age, Melody had always been overly cautious around Nathan's parents, desperately seeking their approval. Yet during all her years with Nathan, they had constantly criticized her, insisting she wasn't good enough for their son.
"What kind of wild child grows up without parents? You dare to chase after our son? Stop trying to climb above your station!"
But despite having no parents to raise her, hadn't she gotten into the same top university as their son?
Yet whenever his parents showed such baseless hostility toward her, Nathan never took her side. He always said, "They're old. They won't be living with us anyway. Just try to be more patient with them."
But wasn't his so-called neutrality actually taking sides?
Melody didn't want to dwell on it anymore.
She believed she would be happy with Jackson.
