On the wedding day, Riley delivered a large package to Melody.
"This is Emma's gift for you," Riley said with a shy smile. "She's in the adjacent hall."
Melody nodded, saying she'd go see her soon.
Riley was livestreaming the wedding to Emma when she suddenly caught a glimpse of a familiar figure passing by her door.
The ceremony was halfway through, just about to reach the exchange of vows, when the doors burst open.
It was Nathan.
After his car accident, Nathan had spent a week in the hospital. When he finally opened his eyes, he saw Claire sleeping beside his bed.
Where was Melody?
As he stirred, Claire woke up. Before she could speak, Nathan asked: "Where's Melody?"
Claire pouted. "I've been the one taking care of you all this time. You just woke up and you're asking about someone else?"
Someone else? Since when was Melody "someone else"?
But he caught onto something more important. "You've been taking care of me this whole time?"
"Of course!" Claire said proudly. "If you don't believe me, ask your parents."
"It's a good thing your mother bailed me out of jail, or I wouldn't have been able to see you, Nathan..." Claire's eyes welled up with tears.
Still dizzy from just waking up, Nathan asked again, "What about Melody? Hasn't she been here?"
"Of course she hasn't!" Nathan's mother, who had been listening from the doorway, couldn't contain herself any longer. She couldn't understand why her son was so fixated on Melody. "She hasn't come to see you once all this time. It's been Claire taking care of you. The moment you wake up, instead of showing concern for her, you ask about someone who doesn't matter..."
Nathan felt inexplicably irritated. He checked his phone—Melody had removed him from her contacts.
But hadn't she told him they would talk when he got home?
He had a strong feeling he needed to go there now.
Seeing him get up, Claire quickly tried to stop him. "Nathan, you just woke up. Where are you going?"
"Just going for a walk," Nathan made up an excuse. His mind was racing, desperately seeking answers.
As soon as his mother left, Claire, knowing she couldn't stop Nathan, secretly followed him in a taxi.
When Nathan arrived at their villa, the silence was eerie.
He opened the door to find an empty living room.
The assistant mentioned that half a month ago, Melody had given the housekeepers a "vacation" and wouldn't be back for a month.
Nathan searched everywhere, but all traces of Melody had been removed. He didn't know if she had relocated her belongings or simply thrown them away.
He scoured the house desperately for clues. Suddenly, he noticed a note on the refrigerator. He rushed over, recognizing her handwriting immediately.
[Nathan, as you wish, we're over. You're free now.]
[May you and Claire live happily ever after.]
What did this mean? Nathan's brow furrowed.
Had Melody really left? But where could she go? He was all she had in this world. How could she just walk away?
Was she upset about Claire? But he had told her repeatedly that he only felt obligated to help Claire—nothing more. He had explained it many times. Why wouldn't she believe him?
Nathan felt unsettled. Unable to make sense of Melody's message, he pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket. Just as he was about to light one, Claire burst through the door.
"Nathan, you can't smoke right now!"
Nathan stared at Claire's sudden appearance, feeling increasingly annoyed.
He hadn't smoked in years. During his junior year, when his family went bankrupt and Claire broke up with him, the weight of everything had crushed him. As he learned to handle business deals, he'd picked up a smoking habit. But after getting together with Melody, who hated the smell, he had gradually quit as part of being the perfect boyfriend.
Out of habit, he still carried a pack, though he no longer smoked.
The person who should have been stopping him from smoking was Melody, not Claire. The realization left him with an indescribable ache.
Back at the hospital, he searched desperately for information about Melody. Finally, he found a trending topic about the Sinclair family's eldest son getting married.
Jackson Sinclair—he knew the name. This was his sister's arranged marriage partner, who had suddenly disappeared. But the name trending alongside Jackson's was Melody's.
Melody was getting married... to Jackson.
This had to be a joke. His immediate reaction was denial.
Suddenly, he remembered the class reunion not long ago.
"I'm getting married soon."
So when Melody said she was getting married, she hadn't meant to him?
How was this possible?!
