Jackson's mother guided Melody through the jewelry store, having her try on piece after piece. Whenever Melody showed the slightest interest in something, she immediately called the sales assistant to add it to their purchases.
Mrs. Sinclair adored Melody. After the wedding incident, she had thoroughly investigated what had happened and learned about everything Melody had endured with the Gray family.
"If what we discovered was this bad, I can only imagine what we didn't uncover," she had said, her eyes filled with compassion whenever she looked at Melody now. As Jackson was the only child of the Sinclair family, Mrs. Sinclair had always wanted a daughter. Unfortunately, Mr. Sinclair had passed away early, but now with Melody in their lives, Mrs. Sinclair genuinely cherished her, treating her like the daughter she never had.
Behind them, their family butler was already loaded down with shopping bags. Melody excused herself to use the restroom, telling Mrs. Sinclair to continue browsing without her.
The moment she rounded the corner, Nathan grabbed her wrist.
She had noticed him earlier—first on the ground floor with Claire, and by the third floor, he was alone.
She yanked her hand away. "If you have something to say, just say it. Don't grab me in public like that."
Nathan had intended to speak, but Melody's cold demeanor left him speechless. Seeing her about to walk away, he quickly blocked her path.
"Why did you leave me?" His voice came out hoarse, barely recognizable.
Since the wedding fiasco, thanks to the Sinclair family's strategic maneuvering, he'd been forced to deal with various complications, leaving him no time to confront Melody directly. He couldn't understand—hadn't he been good enough to her? Why would she treat him this way?
The accident's aftereffects had taken their toll; Nathan had lost considerable weight over the past weeks.
Melody laughed bitterly. "Nathan, are you worried I'm the type who would cling to you?"
"If you couldn't let go of Claire, you could have just told me directly. I'm a grown woman—I can take what I dish out. But can you say the same about yourself?"
Nathan froze. He wasn't sure if Melody was just lashing out or speaking the truth. During this time, at his mother's insistence, Claire had remained by his side. While he claimed he wanted revenge on Claire, he couldn't control his desire to be with her intimately.
"Admit it, Nathan," Claire had whispered against his ear during one of their nights together, her voice ghostlike, "you can't let me go."
Claire's voice was like a hook, drawing him deeper, but Nathan suddenly found it all meaningless. He rolled out of bed. "I'm done."
Claire continued talking from the bed, but he found her voice irritating. He got up to pour himself some water and noticed a mug was missing. He frowned, remembering the ceramic mug.
During a trip to a pottery town, Melody had expressed interest in learning ceramics, so they each made a mug for the other. Nathan had inscribed a small line on the bottom of his creation.
"Melody's Only."
But now, only "Nathan's Only" remained on the coffee table.
He didn't understand why Melody suddenly crossed his mind, attributing it to his love for her.
But did he truly love her? If he loved Melody, would he have slept with Claire?
Being with Claire was just for revenge, Nathan told himself repeatedly. Just for revenge.
Lost in thought, he failed to notice the venomous look Claire gave the ceramic mug.
"Admit it, Nathan—you can't let go of Claire," Melody said, tired of wasting time with him. "If you can't move on, just be with her. I have my own family now, so stop trying to pull me back into your mess."
"But I love you..." Nathan hung his head, still gripping her arm. A strange fear gripped him—an intuition that if he let go now, he'd never see her again.
"Love me?" Melody scoffed. "Only you know how much of your 'love' is real. The only person in your family who ever genuinely cared about me was your sister!"
Melody forcefully broke free from his grasp and returned to the jewelry store, ignoring his calls. As soon as she entered, she saw Mrs. Sinclair waiting anxiously. Seeing Melody return, she quickly ushered her toward the exit.
"We need to go to the hospital."
"Grandfather's had an emergency."
