Mrs. Gray, seeing Nathan's inaction, decided to confront Melody herself.
Claire understood Mrs. Gray's motivations perfectly. The recording Melody had provided confirmed her crimes, and while Mrs. Gray had managed to get her released, she knew that if Melody pursued the matter, she would end up back in jail.
Especially now that Melody had the Sinclair family's backing—if they decided to pursue the matter, not even Mrs. Gray could protect her.
So Claire volunteered to teach Melody a lesson personally.
Nathan hadn't been back to his old home in a long time.
When he pushed open the door, the household staff had returned from their vacation.
They greeted him just as before, making him feel as though he had stepped back in time. Except there was no trace of Melody in this house anymore.
He had returned to retrieve that mug.
Handcrafted items shouldn't go to waste, he told himself.
But after searching every cabinet, he couldn't find it. When he asked the staff, he learned that Claire had accidentally broken it days ago, and they had disposed of it.
Claire.
Nathan was furious. He immediately headed to Claire's place.
"What's wrong, Nathan?" Claire was delighted to find Nathan at her door. She knew that while he claimed to hate her and want revenge, she had him wrapped around her finger.
"Where's my mug?"
"What?" She was confused. Had Nathan come just for a mug? What mug?
"Don't play dumb." Nathan's voice was ice-cold, frightening Claire unexpectedly.
Mug... she suddenly remembered the one she had deliberately smashed days ago—the one with "Nathan's Only" written on the base.
"It broke," she answered.
Nathan struggled to control his emotions. "Did you do it on purpose?"
"Hmph," Claire scoffed. "It's just a mug. Broken is broken—what difference does intention make?"
Claire had deliberately broken it, but so what? Surely Nathan wouldn't get upset over a mere mug.
"That was my mug," Nathan said, emphasizing each word.
"Really, Nathan? You have so many mugs at home, and you're fixated on this particular one?" Though she understood perfectly what he meant, Claire refused to give him satisfaction. "Or was it given to you by an old flame, making it precious to you?"
Nathan laughed coldly. "What right do you have to know? I let you stay there out of pity. What gave you the right to throw away Melody's things?"
"Melody is Jackson's wife!" Claire shot back. "What does it mean that you're secretly keeping another man's wife's possessions?"
"Have you lost your mind?" Though Claire lived away from downtown, people still passed by occasionally, so Nathan grabbed her by the neck and pushed her back into her apartment.
Claire seemed to realize something. "So the mug is just your excuse?"
"What?"
"Mr. Gray," Claire wrapped her arms around his neck, "you came here to sleep with me, didn't you?"
Nathan was speechless, yet he made no move to push her away. Claire gave him a triumphant smile. He couldn't deny her accusation.
His phone's ringtone temporarily broke the standoff.
It was Edward.
"Sorry, sir, we've encountered a complication... It's complicated and also involves Miss Bennett... But I've brought Louie back. It would be better if you questioned him directly, sir."
After getting the address, Nathan prepared to leave immediately. Claire grabbed his clothes—she didn't know who had called, but Nathan had been busy with work lately, and she hadn't seen him in a while. She didn't want him to leave.
Nathan looked at her, recalling Edward's words—"also involves Miss Bennett." He smiled coldly and brought her along.
